Guest Paulo Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 thats it like barleys always benn popular in belgium han't it?
Wiley Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 yea as far as im aware it has been fairly popular over here too mate.I dont think pigeons like eating it tho
Guest Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 That depends if they're brought up on it from Babies, I have no problem getting mine to eat it, when I'm feeding the young birds Barley, I always put it down first when they come back from a training toss Hungry
Wiley Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 if you was to feed this mixed tho, theyd still prefere to eat the other grains im sure
juan de winne Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 A good friend of mine was feeding mostly barley and some of his birds not all were passing pure water . it was pouring out of them and it stank , i even posted a request for any ideas you might have to fix it - he decided to cut the barley out all together and feed peas they were back passing walnut whips within 3 days, its also worth mentioning they all looked fantastic regardless of what their insides were doing. Mine are on bucktons economy with a bit of linseed and black rape , ive noticed that theyre eating the wheat and maize first then moving on to the peas and lastly the beans so im increasing the amount of peas slowly as breeding time approaches to get them used to them.
ALF Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 GOOD BARLEY WILL NOT DO YOUR BIRDS ANY HARM AND WILL NOT COS WET DROPPINGS ONLY BAD FOOD WILL COS IT ;)
Wiley Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 i agree with ya there alf.I defaintly agree it will do the birds no harm. But have to agree with juan there but ive only seen it on one occassion and that was with one widowhood cock everytime i broke the widowers down he would always go water in the end i never broke this bird down and he become brillant bird
juan de winne Posted November 30, 2006 Report Posted November 30, 2006 My m8 would agree with alf , he'd fed barley in various mixes of his own throughout the season and puts this down to a bad batch . the birds that were "leaking" looked 100% really silky feathers they were in top condition.
Roland Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 Barley is at the Reputable Centes around £3 50 per 20 k. Farmers, around £2 to £2 50. But with Wheat, £3 and a bag of Maples (the good English) @ £6 and tic beans at £4 50 a good winter mixture is oibtained which eqauls to £4 a bag of 20k... lasts me till March. Have to add nothing really for the breeding either. Then it would with a seperate helping of Rice do for the racing season. Can anyone post what other feed is really necasary! Saflon / sunflower etc. yes for the sprinter perhaps.... But soaked rice for the distance is all that is realy needed. Be interesting what other feeds and why I guess.
Roland Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 what is it with barley then cause a lot of North Eastern People blokes don't like it. Is it something to do with the old UK strains weren't suited to it? but is there any uk old strains that are kept pure now begs the question? ETC. ETC. they are pigeons for pete's sake, and regardless what loft, or the owners name was, they will / have remained so. Tis surely cods wallop and a insult to basic intelligence to say other wise ... what a pigeon that was brought up say with a Barley mix will no longer like it, or it becomes no good - or better for them - if they are sold to a new owner!! Mond boggles at such stupidity. The whole balance of a diet is surely upto the 'Owners' own wimms and likes and dislikes. Hard distance races have been won on barley alone ... likewise Acorns, but after the mid 50's I haven't seen a like of acorns picked and fed ... wonder why that is. No not because they are no longer any god etc. but because it is easier and simply to buy - and one can afford better as it is the norm - the grains sold. I wonder if the perferred grains of a mix would still be the first eaten if the bird knew what YOU had in store for them. Was a time when Atheletes / boxers trained on protien ... Lugemes etc. have a vast differential of all needed proterties, including amino etc. We rely on what suits our pockets, or what Joe Bloggs recommends, regardless of his sauce, or even their interests, what they endorse, hidden or not1
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 i will use about 75% barley
Guest cloudview Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 am I wrong but farmers fatten their stock on barley . one very good point about using barley is its agood leveller ,ie thats what they leave when they,ve had enough to eat , so a little bit in every feed means you don,t overfeed them
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted December 4, 2006 Report Posted December 4, 2006 beans and barley 50/50 THATS NO WHAT YOU TOLD ME A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO YOU SLEVER

BIGK Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 beans rule in a tin with tomato sauce!! beanz meanz hienz!! lol
BIGK Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 Barley a very under rated grain but very useful when required!! that seems to be the general feeling from all the replies. Thanks
Guest Paulo Posted December 5, 2006 Report Posted December 5, 2006 i CERTIANLY WOULDN'T JUST FEED BAILEY IN THE WINTER AS MUSCLES NEED PROTEIN OR THEY START BREAKING DOWN FAST. MUSCLE IS MORE EASY DIGESTED THAN FAT SO THE BODY WILL EAT MUSCLE QUICKER THAN FAT
birdman55678 Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 I always thought Barley was right in the middle as far as protein was concerned. I have a book and will have to look it up if I can only find my glasses.. Ed
Guest Paulo Posted December 6, 2006 Report Posted December 6, 2006 http://www.squark.co.uk/pigeons.htm theres a chart at this link
murphy Posted December 28, 2006 Author Report Posted December 28, 2006 GOOD BARLEY WILL NOT DO YOUR BIRDS ANY HARM AND WILL NOT COS WET DROPPINGS ONLY BAD FOOD WILL COS IT ;) Quite right Alf,not the barley cos its barley, probably a bad batch of grain. You should never buy corn before you have seen, felt and smelled to check its ok
Guest shadow Posted December 28, 2006 Report Posted December 28, 2006 Malting barley is the best if you can get hold of it that and beans until 2 weeks before you pair up and you will not have any fat hens
maverick Posted December 28, 2006 Report Posted December 28, 2006 MALTED BARLEY IS WHAT YOU WANT . I WORKED IN A DISTILLERY AND USED TO GET IT THE BIRDS LOVED IT BUT YOU HAD TO WATCH THE AMOUNT YOU GAVE
