what is a winner

Maybe in some cases not such a stupid rule, have known people lose a race trying to get 2 rubbers in the same thimble.

Totally agree but the option should be there then it's upto the fancier what to do.

then tell me i have know a member of another club to be the only member of that club to send birds, althought they were marked though another clubs headquarters he timed ten and claimed 10 poition in his club, yet never got in the fed, are these classed as winners i think not although that pigeon holds a first prize. for me that is no winner jmo

the man in the small club can only compete against who is in the club and prohaps he dosent get in the fed because his club hasnt got the pull of the birdage or the are not in the line of flight ect with the wind not helping the pigeon with 4 4ths and fed cards the fancier might be living in the ideal spot with the wind and drag with him so the pigeons with four wins might be the better bird because it has to strike out on its own each week to win its club

Great! Somebody at last on my wavelength.

if you tell my club members this one they disregard it as sore losing ,but one thing i do know is they dont fly from where i fly.

I believe the bird (as you rightly say ) that has the savvy to break away from a massive contingent of birds and head for home, many miles from the main drag and dropping points deserve a serious watching for future success .

as a beginner this is a win ...not a signposted jaunt up the eastcoast!!   ;)

Wind play`s a big part in our sport,  and there will be better birds on the day depending where ye are, but at the end of the day people only look to see who won . nobody remembers whos 2nd unless thats you ;D ;D ;D ;D

Perhaps its different racing in our area our fed is pretty tight knit, So for me if your in a small club you need to be getting the fed to credit your win a win. jmo ;)

I totaly agree there is winners and there is winners and often the best bird is not the winner. But the question is what would you describe as a winner so it has to be the bird which won the race.  But as they say always do you home work beacuse 10x1sts in a 3 member club that sends 30 birds a week is not worth a lot compared to a bird which has 10 positions against 100's or 1000's of birds IMO

our fed covers a large area here in norfolk with the main bulk of birds heading for norwich but the smaller clubs in our fed out in the sticks it would be very hard for them to break into the top 20 of the fed due to the fact they our 20 miles off the line of flight and have no birds to help them even the wind doesnt give them much of a chance , so the man who dominates his club must be applauded his bird has had to strike out from the big batch and fly 30 miles on its own which is unnatural for a pigeon to do this as they are a flock bird , for this man to top the fed he needs a smash to happen so every one is in the same boat

the saying 'It isn't he that tries and fails that is beaten,.... but he that does take part is a defeatist.

A bird that battles and deserves merit, Like Tony C. says is a winner to me.

If from Thurso in a westerly wind a birds in Anglecy is beaten by a bird in lowerstoft by say 50 ypm, I know well the real winner, and it won't be the East Coast Club bird.... though that will be a winner too, but not the better bird on the day and that's for sure.

If a bird wins a prize it is a prize winer if it wins a 1st it is a first prize winer calling a bird a winner is just a general term suggesting success at some level but not being specific!

My opinion is all the birds back from a big race are all winners .ok ,ok , but some birds and this is what i can't get my head around being a novice is that they all start off at the same point but many birds have to travel a lot longer than others and maybe the first part of the race will be better as say the weather is good and the nearer birds will make a better time , then the rest of the race for the other birds back to there loft might be bad so making them slower so they have no hope of winning . It is the only sport i know of that the competitors all start at the same point but finish in different places and some fly shorter and some fly longer distances but all are in the same race . Crazy for the winning bird . How many birds have won a big race from the highlands say? is there any or are all the winners from the same area? It would be interesting to know .

you're dead right Willow, most races are from a to b, pigeon racing is from a to z and everything in between, must be why we enjoy it  ;D
