Guest TAMMY_1 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 3 weeks before the first race and start at 5 miles
tarzan Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 the day there took away from the parents ,straight into training crates untill there eating and drinking this goes on for two weeks ,10 - 12 miles first toss .
Guest chrisss Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 3 weeks before the first race and start at 5 miles as this is my first year racing yb, this thread is important to me,why start at 5 miles? if the birds are running they must be doing more than 5 miles around the area anyway,or do you do it to teach line of flight?
Merlin Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Soon as they start to range, they are started on their education, 5 mls all points of compass, eventually worked out to 20 miles line of flight, late evening tossing 4/5 times per weektill first,no further tossing.races only
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Im being told by all the best racers in Canada, dont train YB till they stay in the air for half an hour none stop. or your wasting birds,. And why start at 5 miles? thats sick! :-/especialy if the birds are just being weaned, I think every one should have a one mile start.
ALF Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 My y/b's dont start training till 2 or 3 weeks before the 1st race and the 1st toss for them is 16-17 mls from Carnwath
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 My y/b's dont start training till 2 or 3 weeks before the 1st race and the 1st toss for them is 16-17 mls from Carnwath and how many of those birds make it home? :-/
ALF Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 and how many of thouse birds make it home? :-/ Dont usually lose any of them...why?
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Well i dont see how birds make it home from 17 miles without training at lets say 1-10 miles? dont they get lost?
ALF Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Well i dont see how birds make it home from 17 miles without training at lets say 1-10 miles? dont they get lost? NO
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 Well you got me! LoL now can i go to my loft, take my birds 10 miles and let them go? LoL i just usualy start at 1 mile. better safe then sorry. i make shure my birds dissapear for 1 hour before i start any road training,
jimmy white Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 i beleive if you can get your ybs ranging for a couple of hours every day ,, they can go 30 miles and home ok , i knew of eddie newcombe traing his ybs 50 miles first toss,,,but they were ready for it ,,,,,,,,,,,,,the reason i say this 30 miles is when i moved to kelso , ybs got out ,singly,, returned to edin,,,,,,but i suppose the safest way is staging them,,,5 10 15 20 then a few times at this b4 going further

andy Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 First toss 12 miles. If they are ranging for an hour or so then tossing them a mile or 5 is only insulting their intelligence.
Lennut Tar Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Well you got me! LoL now can i go to my loft, take my birds 10 miles and let them go? LoL i just usualy start at 1 mile. better safe then sorry. i make shure my birds dissapear for 1 hour before i start any road training, Each to their own as we say ;) if your happy !!!!!!!!! continue doing it your way. For me ???????? :P 1 mile tossing etc, is a total insult to the intelligence of a racing pigeon in my view. My first toss is 11 miles, that's where the freeway ends here, if it was 20 miles etc I would quite happily toss at that distance, as I have done in the past. Enjoy.
Lennut Tar Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 First toss 12 miles. If they are ranging for an hour or so then tossing them a mile or 5 is only insulting their intelligence. ;D ;D ;D If I had only known ;) I would have said something different :) . Enjoy.
Ronnie Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I think the first few tosse's need to be close to home say about 10 mile(unless your putting a few old birds in as well ).The reason being its not that they dont know where they are its because if they panic when there released they will have time to correct themselves before they go to far.if you have a few old birds to steady them there is usually no problem.Mine will start 3-4 weeks before the first race and have 5 tosses at about 10 mile then jumped to about 30 mile in the race line.I will mix in a few tosses of about 30-40 mile in other directions as well. But all this depends on weather.

I wouldnt insult my youngsters intelligence with a 1 mile toss! 5 is good
Guest shadow Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 once ranging for 1-2 hours 20 miles and keep them there if you have time single them up or up in pairs
cemetary Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 At the end of the day they are just young birds mind, i doo what jimmy white does, give them short tossess to start of with, then increase the miles slowly on them. I done this last year with young birds and found it to be the best way for them, dont just jump them into miles to catch up. Nice and easy with them, you will here people saying 5 miles, not worth the bother, well i think it is, but thats just me, and thats the way i doo it. :)
Guest Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 [ Nice and easy with them, you will here people saying 5 miles, not worth the bother, well i think it is, but thats just me, and thats the way i doo it. :) aye me...(kewl)
hepste Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 For what it's worth, my own view is that ybs need confidence to get them going. I have no doubt that most can cope with a 10 miler to start with. However, shorter tosses at the beginning of their education tells them "Hey, I don't mind getting in the basket, I'll soon be home with ease"
cemetary Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 Ave heard owe the stories whilst training you birds, some guys start them off at 20 miles and still loss them, they are only trying to catch up with the guy next door whos is at 25 miles. Last year i started training them at 5 miles then so on until about 30-35 miles, i started training 22 young birds, after 13 tossess i was left with 19, onwhich i thought that was good, but unfortunately work came first again, it all depends how much time you have got. But i think, you are better taking your time with them, as for taking old ones with them, i have tried this and found the old ones home before theyoung birds, they just break away from them.
