Guest mick bowler Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Pigeons would'nt be pigeons without the annual YB disasters. The majority of us have them, its not nice when it happens but its all part and parcel of the sport i'm afraid. With regards to percy, i really think you lads have to start changing your trail of thought on training. Over here we train around 5 at a time, damage limitation, it still happens and you still loose birds but the fallout is a lot less. If you can vary the lib point too so the small batches are not coming thru the same area. Of course the only good thing to come out of seeing percy go into your birds, is you know where he hunts, and a solution can be found quite easily!
cemetary Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Spoken to a few guys latley, they havent started to train the ybs yet, they are sick of hearing the disasters people are having with the BOP, they are just a fecking thorn in the side, Pete i hope you get most of them back mate, keep yir chin up, all the best.
BLACK W F Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 you will get them give them a chance to work in about best of luck
pigeonpete Posted July 17, 2009 Author Report Posted July 17, 2009 Think you are right about letting a few go at a time I always did it with my ybs when i was racing seems to cut down the amount you lose also makes your birds think letting them all go together they just tend to follow each other used to let mine altogether first time i trained them after that they let go in 3s i understand that rose, just not always practical for me to do that! there is not enough hours in the day :-)
Guest mick bowler Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 Rose, you dont want too few going up together, that hands the advantage back to Percy, if there 5 or 6 he just atatcks the group without picking out a single target, any less than that and he will pick his target, and pursue it. Worse thing for a young pigeon is one on one. Pete, it does not really take that much extra time. If you say you have 30 YB, all you need is 3 drops. The first one you put 6 up, then onto the next drop a mile or two up the road then repeat again, then go to the last drop point. Then head back stopping where you stopped before, so the last drop is your same place as the first drop. I know lot of guys like to let the birds have a few mins to adjust but to percy its like a red rag to a bull. In popular training areas the percy will even gather if they see a car pull up.
Guest karl adams Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 well 28 back now out of the 40 just 11 to go, so i think i have been lucky now may be the time to join the fine weather flayers as i don't want to lose any more ;D ;D ;D
mark Posted July 17, 2009 Report Posted July 17, 2009 i feel sorry for your loses, but why do people put all there eggs in one basket.? surely it would be better to train in smaller batches in case things go wrong.

magpie Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 You're doing well Pete - we had our 70 young birds attacked by a peregrine when we let them out for exercise two weeks ago and 25 of them were still missing at dark. The only one we have heard of since was reported in London !
magpie Posted July 18, 2009 Report Posted July 18, 2009 I should point out that is about 100 miles away, so it just goes to show what happens when they are panicked.
