Guest CS Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 I like old birds much better than YBs but YBs are just learning and like to watch YBs racing too...
Roland Posted August 1, 2006 Report Posted August 1, 2006 Y/b's are a lot leveller and novices have better chances as a whole, I feel, of winning or being nearer to the top come Race Night. Which is also good, as in most cases it is their’ first races. Most do not fly broken old birds, like I did lol. Still I quite enjoyed that and got real excited and a great buzz as I recall at the time.
THE FIFER Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 GOING BACK U ONLY BRED YBS FOR REPLACING UR STOCK, AND THE RACES WERE TAKEN AS TRAINING NOT THE COMPETITION AS OF NOW, U ONLY BRED A FEW AND U HAD MOST OF THEM LEFT FOR YEARLINGS, MAYBE LOST 1 OR 2 BUT NO MORE.
andy Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 ANY DISTANCE, YOUNG OR OLD, A RACE IS A RACE AND THERE TO BE WON, THATS WHY I KEEP RACING PIGEONS.

Guest jason Posted August 4, 2006 Report Posted August 4, 2006 old birds as you've less chance of losing them. lol ;D jason
Roland Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Well the + may have some truth Peterpan, but 500 milers have never been hard to have and race. Infact can't be many birds that can't or won't do the 500 miles on the day. So yes I agree some may be frightened to lose a vested, by not send further, but few to - day wory about a 500 miler I believe. JMO
Guest Paulo Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I think I am going to enjoy young birds best as you can build up a bond with your little charges and mould them into lean mean fed topping machines lol
Keepsmilingqueen Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 i much prefer old bird racing so far, but i think thats becouse i was left an already well established team by my late father, its the 1st time iv bred my own young birds and although they are bred from my fathers choice of pairings they leave a lot to be desired (could be my fault not theres however as its a bit like the blind leading the blind) ;D i raced the full program every race with my oldies and only lost 3 out of a team of 30. with the youngones i started with 15 (5 of which are latebreds) i promptly lost 5 during early training tosses, which left me with 5 suitable to race, out of those i lost 1 in the 1st race (it has since been reported dead in lancs :'(, must have gone in the total wrong direction poor bugger) but the other 4 are still here, and my latebreds are training so i can stick em in the last race of the season when the NEHU comes back to bubworth. never mind lol theres always next year ;D sharron
Guest Posted August 16, 2006 Report Posted August 16, 2006 Sharron, If I were you I would train what you have left good and hard and forget about racing them this year.
Guest CS Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 HAVE TO SAY BOTH AS I JUST ENJOY THIS SPORT RAY Yes, i agreed with you, mate.
DEEJAY Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Young birds it's the stuff champions are made from---the proving ground so to speak! JMHO!
Pompey Mick Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 Well the + may have some truth Peterpan, but 500 milers have never been hard to have and race. JMO Down here on the South Coast getting 500ml on the day from across the Channel is still regarded as an achievement, in fact getting a race when the birds are allowed to fly 500mls on the day is an achievement. Are you saying Roland that every bird you have had has the capability to fly 500 mls on the day, have you lost none as yb's or yearlings or at any of the stages that have to be reached before a pigeon is prepared for the '500miler'.What percentage of the birds you have bred go onto achieve the 500ml on the day status, It will be interesting to see because I might be interested in buying some birds from you, because they're rarer than rocking horse s**t in my loft.
