chubs Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I'm very excited at prospect of training my new racers when the time comes & phillip's gonna be exhausted from the grilling i'm gonna give him at the weekend! ;D I'm sucking up as much info as poss & trying to get as much info as poss, i'm not a total novice as i've been flying a kit of rollers & had some other types but this here racing is a different league!... Was wondering if any of you can remember some of the mistakes you made when starting up? yours in sport, james.
Merlin Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Too many to list and still making them no doubt, never be afraid to make a mistake, its all part of the learning process, trial and error, its more important if you learn from your mistakes, wishing you all the best,oh never be scared to ask.

Tony C Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 I guess the first and biggest mistake I made was not laying a concrete base to sit my loft on. 2nd mistake, thinking that some of the old boys way of doing things were outdated.
Guest rodders Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 i think the biggest mistake you can make is to chase averages before you have an established team to many good pigeos wasted
PIGEON_MAN Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Allways remember the old saying "Dont try and run before you can walk.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Allways remember the old saying "Dont try and run before you can walk. probably the best one of them all
REDCHEQHEN Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 If in doubt - leave it out cos I know the times we haven't - we have not seen the bird again

James the worst you can make at this early stage is to train too soon on grey overcast days. Remember if you can see definition or better still broken cloud its ok. Beware of the cold grey days. If you train in these conditions your will be finished before start. Good luck.
Hogni Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Allways remember the old saying "Dont try and run before you can walk. A very good advice. A very good advice i can give you is that you should work out a system that fits your schedule and stick to it no matter what, if the results are not coming and you decide to change systems it will only make things worse.
lawrie Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 dont let a bird out if your not sure if it will return. i did it the other day with a tippler. out it went and it was never to be seen again! wont be doing that again.
THE PRIEST Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Keep all new introductions in the loft seperate from your own birds until you are sure they are carrying nothing. Back in 1998 i alowed a mate to keep 6 young birds in my loft while he built a new young bird section they were alowed in with my own young birds and the whole team went down with salmonella within days. My mistake. About 60% had to be destroyed. michael.
frank-123 Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 dont listen to every pigeon fancier or your head will burst with all the answers you get take a little from them all then suit yourself and your birds

The biggest mistake I made etc ;D ;D ;D was getting involved with pigeons in the first place :P & I've been trying to rectify my mistake, for 50 odd years. So can anyone here help me, or am I a lost cause like many others here on this site. As some would say at times. Enjoy

jimmy white Posted February 2, 2008 Report Posted February 2, 2008 on widowhood,,,,,showing the hens to often. yb,s putting all my eggs into one basket [best split the yb team ] in my opinion
Whats it called Cumbernauld Posted February 7, 2008 Report Posted February 7, 2008 Don't be scared to make your own mistakes. Listen to others 1. Good sound Pigeons tried and tested 2. Well ventilated and dry loft 3. test your birds in the first two seasons 4. never over medicate your birds 5. Never over crowed your loft 6. Get a routine with your birds and stick to it 7. A good late bread is worth its weight in gold (be patient in its second year) 8. Don't let setbacks get you down, if at first you don't succeed try and try again Best of luck
Guest casbri Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 my mistake was showing hens to the cocks to much
Guest Posted February 8, 2008 Report Posted February 8, 2008 i think one of the biggest mistakes i made, was thinking the birds i bought, were better than, the gift birds i got, big big mistake. Agree totally, birds given with good will are often better than birds produced purely for money. You only get out as much as you put in so treat them well, keep them cleaned out, train them well, make sur your birds have access to an avery so they can actually see where they live!.

carl Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 had a few birds sitting last season and were coming very good just to eggs, they won and topped the fed in the early races,so next race was huntingdon 180 miles to us,birds were a few days away from chipping out so i decided to trick a few with chipping eggs and slipping a few ybs from the stock under them on the friday after noon,BIG MISTAKE birds turned on the soft chuck and the race ended up being a very hot one,i was miles behined on a good day,i blame myself not the birds
snowy Posted February 11, 2008 Report Posted February 11, 2008 as was said earlier, DONT RUN BEFORE YOU CAN WALK....... my advice is just take things slowly, i know that its hard because you want everything done like all the experienced fanciers. BUT DONT!! one of my regretable mistakes was training my young birds too soon (pushing them too far too soon). i will never do this again. let them get well homed round the loft before the first training toss, and make the first traing toss as short as you wish (2 miles the first 3 times, then 5 miles, then 10 miles & so on. dont think that you have to take them to 20 miles the first toss. be very patient. good luck.... and the best tip i ever had was putting cut fresh garlic cloves in the water 24 hours before you give them.
