as you can see see my white saddleback returned home after 3 days with his feathers cut on both sides of his tail  why would anyone do this?

That is truly horrendous... there must surely be some very sad little people out there in the world.

Knowing absolutely nothing about pigeons... I don't suppose there could be a humane explanation for this.. like the bird being tangled in something and someone having to cut the feathers to free it?

I'm probably being stupid, but I cannot imagine anyone deliberately wanting to harm such a lovely looking bird...not to mention the fact that I cannot think of anything a pigeon could do to incite a persons wrath?

I suppose I am just looking for the reasonable...because the other alternative is so awful.

I am so sorry that you have had this happen to your bird. Every time I see and hear things like this I get really angry and frustrated because I can't catch up with the low life that has done this sort of thing. I also get frustrated when sometimes people know the culprits and are prepared to do nothing about it.

We all know that parents and authorities do nothing to keep these little darlings in line. The end result is often that we end up with big useless darlings running around doing goodness knows what, without fear or faviour.

I still think that the solution, tried and tested, is to knock the door and have a little chat about things. Better still, they seem to listen more intently when the little chat takes place at something like four in the morning. Like it or lump it that will always be my way.

Only possible explanation is whoever took it in thought that cutting its tail would stop it returning to you so they could settle it to their loft.Have any of the flights been cut as well?

Is it a hen. Tails are cropped like that to aid treading on large tailed birds, It may be that someone got it in and tried to breed off it and maybe it escaped, what kind of saddle back is it?

Saddle back Indian fantails need both their tales and vents trimmed sometimes to aid treading

its a cock bird chickadee and a racer from the logan strain, bit of a stroppy/bossy thing as well who likes to think hes the daddy of the loft :) i cant see anyone mistaking him for a hen with his big wattles and bold head  the only strange thing that i forgot to mention was that he stunk to high heavens when he got home  the same sort of smell you get when you pass a sewage treatment works  god only knows what he got up to and where he went on his travels?  if only pigeons could talk   debbie :-/

very nice pigeons chickadee  i must admit that ive got a soft spot for fantails myself but i dont think they would last long where i live with the hawks :(  im happy enough with my racers which i got started with when a stray decided to move into my garden shed a couple of years ago and never went back to his old owner (who didnt want him anyway) so i kept him, got him a hen bird and before i knew it i had a loft full of gifted racing pigeons and some more stray racers  ive still got a stray tippler here from last year but her owner wouldnt send for her so thats another addidtion to my loft     take care   debbie :)
