Guest MOSAIC2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Can i go to the nearest bridge and collect a few wild pigeons to race will wild birds home?
OLDYELLOW Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 yup probably back to the bridge ;D ;D ;D ;D , wild birds will have diseases also will be too wild to pair up and breed , better to get some captive bred specimens
Guest Doade Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 I can see British Rail allowing ets under one of its bridges ;D
Guest Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Any wild pigeons that come near my loft, will automatically be introduced to the pail of water technique. ;)
Guest MOSAIC2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 I was going to get a few young ones under the bridge and il treat them for all the diseases the question is do they home? since wild birds dont have any eyesign so im told
Guest Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Think one of Alf Bakers best every breeders was a young bird that had fell out of the nest under a bridge,he picked it up and took it home and rest is history, but not for me mate.
Guest MOSAIC2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 im going to try a few pair next year why dont they have any eyesign if they home does that mean theres nothing in eyesign
Blue Chequer Pied Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Was there not a story on here a while back about somebody topping their Fed with one of these birds? Paul.
Guest MOSAIC2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 ;Dsounds like these bridges could be as valuable to us as louella
Roland Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 yup probably back to the bridge ;D ;D ;D ;D , wild birds will have diseases also will be too wild to pair up and breed , better to get some captive bred specimens Disagree there. Had one come into my loft, thought it would be a good watch out merchant. Treated the same and trained as others, Neither mine, nor yours, or anyone elses will beat it home over 60 miles. Never went further of course and could send as trainer or racer of course. Many, yes very many have won clubs and Feds. Wills worked on the Gas board. He like the Blacks, so him and his mate Dick ****** (He's still winning and seling them) So a coup was built. Any blacks were rung and tethered, then collected and placed in the coup. They devasted many, and flew the pants of the Fed some weeks. Sold them 4 years down the line to a well know stud. Most kids, and many of those that wanted cheap birds raced them with great sucess. Catlin use to only have the 'Church'.... rung and tethered youngsters, and did very well with them. A lad had the stray in Lodon, caught another and flew them to Rabbit hutches placed on top of each other. Tipton......... only had three trained up. Couldn't afford to go far. He saved up and sent ONE to the National. First race ever, for him and the pigeon.... won the National. There are countless expensive breeding crap that become townies. Just why :-/ should it be that when two meet up and mate they automatically become useless crap.... gosh just a few weeks prior they were good enough to pin the fanciers hopes on of acheiving great foundation racing birds. Many grand children are great throw backs.... and the OUTCROSS is all so very inportant. Would I try them :-/ Yeah I reckon I would. Any reds / grizzles etc. that look promising that owners don't want back, give me a shout. I'd breed some pairs up and see how thay fare for sure.

Guest MOSAIC2009 Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 I could save money on birds and do away with the loft and fly them to the bridge
jimmy white Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 Was there not a story on here a while back about somebody topping their Fed with one of these birds? Paul. yes ;D ;D ;D me ;D,, but slightly different, rung a yb in a barn ,, parents were rung [lost /wild racers] but did top the fed with" barnie" ;D ;D ;D never had an ailment in its life ,,flew rennes 555 miles ;D[took a while though] ;D
Dave barrie Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 ive allways thought of pairing a racer back to a rock dove, to improve the genes type of thing,? mind ou, would have to climb a ruddy big cliff to catch it eh. :-/ ;D ;D
OLDYELLOW Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 if a wild bird is in a loft they bounce off every wall trying to escape not something id do again as a 10 year old kid i had done same thing , i dont doubt if caught young before fledge and rung you would have much a problem , as have heard many similar storys winning with wild birds , as previously said there decendants of failed racers for what ever reason they failed in the first instance
gooner Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 i seem to remember reading anartical a while back where a chap could not afford to start up so he caught half a dozen pairs from his town center, birds that he liked the look of, he bred off them and the ybs won every yb race that year
Guest lvlasked Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 when you think about it them townbirds flying endless amouts of time some times around the towns alll day haha you no where iu of to nexted year for some YBs
pjc Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 many many older fanciers will have started this way, no money to spend so collect sqwabs from church or bridges etc. I know somebody that was winning with them recently and called them "van streeters"!
Guest asha Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Hi Mosaic,Go ahead and try it,most streeters are only decendents of racers gone wrong generations back,we did it when we were kids, great fun,you will be suprised how they home if you take squeakers out the nest, different with woodies ect,as OLDYELLOW says as they grow they go crazy, smashing themselves against everything.
Taylorsloft Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Was there not a story on here a while back about somebody topping their Fed with one of these birds?
