Yep. I have one family of birds that have feathered legs. They are decended from a White Hen that bred a lot of winners for me and others, and a Grizzle Cock that performed from Thurso and from Pau several times. I don't like it because as they get older the rings can get too tight. My best Stock Cock from this family had to have his ring cut off this year. I did'nt like having to do it, but I was forced to.

This year I have a Young Grizzle Cock with feathered legs. He has flown really well all the way to Lilliers. But I know now, that if he carries on, he will, in the end, have to have his ring cut off. He will be part of my Widowhood Team next year.

Takes me back a long time Sammy, to when I was a teenager; some of my grizzles had feathery legs, was told then probably goes back to Gits.

Anyone know if feather legs is a dominant or recessive trait? Seem to remember it cropping up now & again, rather than in every nest?

I got a Black cock from my good friend Alan Marshall of Cudworth Barnsley last year and he has feathers right to his toes, he looks like a cross Westie. He is bred from birds of Jimmy Gibbons from the North Eastand he has bred my best youngbird this year (only slightly feathered legs).

When I was young I bought a pair of Karel Hermans from Mr Fletcher of Normanton and the hen was the most beautiful Blue Pied hen I have ever seen. She always won prizes in the shows for me and she had feathered legs.

The Gits pigeons i had threw up feather legs also, mostly Reds. I do get occasional feather legs through my Wildermeerch also. SL

I think we can easily get ourselves side tracked into believing some of these old wives tales. The only thing that matters and should matter is, which birds feet touch the loft first. I am willing to believe, that in some strains, the gene for feathered legs can sometimes be coupled with the genes to win races. But I doubt if that would be true, most of the time. In fact, if I ever found that all my winning pigeons had feathered legs, I would actively try to breed it out of them. Unfortunately, the gene for feathered legs is dominant and is likely to be very hard to eliminate. For me, it is a question of living with it, knowing that from time to time I will have to retire birds because they will have to have the rings cut off their legs.

We have a thread of feathered legs in our lofts, it stems from a 1986 Dutch golden breeding hen we had, evrything from her won, she is now in the blue sky above but many generations later birds with feathered legs are still winning in our lofts including our SNFC Newbury winner. Have even seen some birds to have small feathers on their claws.
