I haven't had much experience with long distance races, having only sent these past 2 seasons - but I came to a conclusion that  is probably the opposite of everybody elses LOL !!!

The cocks did better on natural last year than the hens, and the hens did better on roundabout this year - than the hens on natural the year before, the cocks didn't perform at all from the distance on roundabout - in fact the majority didn't even bother coming home - whereas we only lost one hen from the distance racing roundabout

So next year cocks will be raced natural from the distance - but the hens will be on roundabout

forgot to say  hens i pair to flying out stock cocks and dont pair the hens to these cocks till may june time so its the hens 1st nest of the season so they are extra keen

If one looks at the 'Nationals' results, and regardless of location, one sees that naturual dominate, and hens dominate the sexes.

i noticed that other day when looking through previous mnfc nfc results alot of hens taking cards.

all the best

Natural hens would be my choice, but with natural you need to know your birds, some fly better driving, some sitting 10 day and some to a youngster, the art of natural flying is knowing what makes individual birds tick and having them in the right condition for there tardet races.

Widowhood is easier for conditioning a team but not always easy to motivate them to fly 500+ obviously depending on the correct breeding as well of course.

Just started this year, so definitely not speaking from experience, but the theory is that hens drive theirselves to return on the day so they are able to take their turn of sitting the eggs.  The cocks don't have the same drive since their turn is not till later in the morning.  The fact that hens seem to dominate the result either bears this out or this is why the theory arose, but this theory is from way back, well prior to the 60's.
