Hi I am not a pigeon fancier but i have come here as i need your help. Have just been for a walk. on the way back we found a pigeon who can't fly or stand. It is not a racing pigeon - well no ring. Very beautiful but very thin - his breastbone is really prominent. No sign of damage but v weak - just flapped into a stream when we came along so i picked him up and brought him home. He is in a hutch in the rabbit shed with a hay nest, bowl of water and bowl of crumbled up fat ball (bird see and fat type). Any suggestions? his eyes aren't closing over or anything - when you look at him he looks fine but he just can't seem to move so i am worried he doesn't even have the energy to eat. i mean he might be ill or poisoned or anything and that is why he is not eating etc but if it is just the weather and he is too weak i don't want him to die just coz he is past being able to feed himself - thoughts or help greatly appreciated?

Thank you

Rachel

As wee cunny says sugar or better still a spoonfull of honey disolved in a cup of water and any fresh grains, barley, rice, peas etc. Let him know where the water is by dipping his whole beak in it. Well done you and good luck.

There is a bird rescue centre near you that may be better equipt to help the bird, i'm guessing its a wood pigeon or a feral but they would have the experience to deal with the little fella. Good luck and well done for taking the time to help him/her.

so he has done a white poo. He has been on a hay nest on a snugglesafe this evening. I have popped some seeds in - i crumbled up a fat ball and prob popped about 10 seed sized bits in - didn't want to overdo it. and also dropped small amounts of warm water in his mouth with sugar and salt in. again wasn't sure how much to give so i hope he's had enough/not too much. anyway, i guess i will have to see how things are going in the morning. just reheated the pad and popped him back on his nest so will be ok for the night. thanks for all your help.

morning. the pigeon survived the night which is great. just fed and watered him/her who is looking a bit perkier, touch wood. Did another poo (perfectly aimed onto snugglesafe cover) and reheated the pad and left him to it for the morning.

Great news! I am off to Essex first thing and was just out in the rabbit shed trying to teach Lee my b/f how to force feed a pigeon food and water (with his fat sausage fingers being unable to open the beak and whinging he can't do that and the cats and rabbits etc). Anyway, the little pigeon started eating out of his bowl!! Horay! So another positive step!

Wood pigeon. Will be your best friend now. We had a young dove that homed to our loft when it was very young. Then it started nesting in my garden tree for 2 years. Think hawk got it

There must have been some underlying illness going on Rachel.  You cared enough to make his last days comfortable, safe and hunger free so don't beat yourself up about it.

Thank you for trying to help him.
