Cooleflyer Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 Hello, i've attached two pictures of a young roller that was bred around Oct/Nov. I just noticed that his feathers were in rag order, literally!! I dont know enough about the moult yet to know whether or not this is a problem. Have them on linseed and conditioner anyway. Can anyone set me straight?
Guest youngboy Posted January 28, 2010 Report Posted January 28, 2010 you shoud try put some garlic oil sunflower seed oil etc on it and try then!!
Jeams Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Maybe it's a kind of flee, you should give them a bath and put some postassium permanganate and diluted to a proper propotion.
chickadee Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 It may be some kind of feather mite.
pjc Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 i suspect its just not been very well reared and there was something lacking in the diet. As it is very late bred Oct/Nov it won't have moulted but when it does it should be fine.
Guest IB Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 No offence, but this is the kind of thing that should have been checked out at regular intervals when the bird was growing in the nest. Something has gone very wrong during rearing and in my opinion it should have been culled back then. Another way of looking at it ~ this is what you can see that's gone wrong - what about the things you can't see, like heart, lung, gut etc.?
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 Yes something has gone wrong rearing, but should be ok once moulted. I once found a squeaker collared dove which had simialr feathering and i put it down to being dirty in the nest :-/
gingell Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 have you sprayed the bird with any in the last mounth and have you had the birds shut in for the winter.
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 They could also have been damaged blood quills when the bird was in the nest :-/
stan p Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 couple ov baths will go a lomg way to puting them feathers write then lets see them after the bird as preamed them
alex young Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 have you sprayed the bird with any in the last mounth and have you had the birds shut in for the winter. Yes, looks like bird has been dipped in something like Duramitex and lost it's oils in the feathering.
gingell Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 seen this in mates loft last year two birds nest mates your right couple baths and there fine raced after ok. maybe some thing two do with the breeding.
kirky Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 will moult out ok, has been bred too late in the year,
Guest frank dooman Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 i take it its not a racer so prob come good next year but do agree with ib should have been got rid earlier it will never be right
Guest bigbok Posted January 29, 2010 Report Posted January 29, 2010 just late hatch feathers that have not gooten the best start in life after it moults out next moult it will be fine just leave it alone
Cooleflyer Posted February 1, 2010 Author Report Posted February 1, 2010 thanks everyone for all the info. I dont think its lice or mites a I can't see anything and they've been dipped, its been flying nearly everyday since it took to the wing, even doing an hour and a half yesterday. Its had a couple of baths since and thats definetly helped the wing feathers. It always had good seed, corn + thepax so hopefully a good rest, + some vits and it will moult out. All the Best
Guest strapper Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 it looks like it been pushed through aviary wire backwards is this the only bird that has this?
stan p Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 them feaihers have mothing to do with the way bird was reard eather toucht something out side or something spilled onit inside loft my opion
Roland Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 Sometimes in life, the first loss is the best loss. I believe any sign of a poor constitution for example should be erradicated. Or just used as a fosdter parent. have funnily enough a couple of pairs that shouldn't be here I guess. But they will be used to rear other birds and then lost given the chance by Mr. basket.
Guest TAMMY_1 Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 i suspect its just not been very well reared and there was something lacking in the diet. As it is very late bred Oct/Nov it won't have moulted but when it does it should be fine. agree with you there Phil and like you say it should moult out okay
