ONE OLD PIGEON FOUND IN LOFT WITH SYMPTOMS... All other pigeons seem fine with no symptoms.

The bird is looking up at loft ceiling and a slight imbalance... Bird has been isolated and within a few hours seemed to have lost its sight almost completely.

One other pigeon found in the same state in the loft two years ago.

Anybody any ideas what this could be? Possible Paratyphoid / Paramyxo?

I'm an experienced flyer of over 30 years, but I need a little help with this one if anybody is able to offer some guidance lease.

A symptom of Paramixo is what they call star gazing, looking up as you describe. Getting the pigeon tested is the only sure way of finding out.

sounds like paramyxo i would jab all birds asap

With respect jabbing them if they have it will not cure it, And both have similiar symptons. I had paratyphoid, not nice attall. So really need to get them tested.

Have they been jabbed for paratyphoid/pmv?

hope no more have got it.

hi pete ;)

yes if it is diagnosed then vaccinating them is the way to go, it might sound backwards but its the right thing to do.

it is believed that when they get this type of illness their organs like their kidneys etc start shutting down so the injection is believed to kick the kidneys back into action ..thus enabling the imune system to kick back into working....to fight the illness.

the instructions would be to get rid of all birds showing signs of the illness and vaccinate the rest.

but i would advise anyone with suspected signs to visit a vet with knowledge of this type of illness.

guessing will only result in further birds testing for the illness.

act now or pay later!!

i cant understand why go and get birds tested if they are already vaxinated weed the birds out that are like this will sort out all problems in ones loft this time off year the birds should be like pictures if not ventilation is suspect (if in doubt chuck it out bin )

Isolate infected birds as soon as possible, its paramyxo i would think, i had something very similiar in October 2008 and it took around 5 weeks to clear the loft completely. Use Columbivac today or lastest tomorrow, it will work in around 4 weeks so at least it will give you an end date.

Keep plenty of food in the hopper and give electrolytes and multi vits everyday, also Sedichol will really help protect the livers.

As for the invected birds some will not be in good condition come the end and you will have to take a view on them but some esp breeding birds can make a good recovery.

My 2009 old bird season wasnt good and i put this down to the outbreak in October however from that Old Bird team i bred the best team of young birds ive ever had, so there is hope.

Arguably you need to vacinate twice a year!!!!

it sounds like its  Paramyxo?  judging by your discription  if ones got it they will all have it just some will show the symptoms like losing ballance head kneck twisting  as long as they eat and drink they will over come it jab them and keep multi vits in the water and they will come  ok but still get them tested  and before any one knocks this i had it many years ago  with my y/bs  and let it run its corse

and with in a fortnight all clear i culled 2 that was all and some of the best birds i ever had where bred that year

What did you do / find out about the case two years ago?

issolate ill birds and take one or two to a avian vet ( one dead for autopsy one alive to test ) you can only effectively treat when you know exactly what you have , as said in here the two diseases are notifiable contact defra and they'll advise where to get tested all the best Mark
