good pigeons never seem to get ill personally I never propped up sick pigeons no matter how well bred they were

i tend to agree with your statement i think ybs and yearlings tend to ail alot quicker once they get to two year olds they tend to ail alot less if not at all , just canker coci and on rare occasions worms

Hi Josh as you had a high cocci count all your doing is keeping the numbers down so in effect this was high usual symptoms bubbly droppings , however the loosing of weight would give me concerns it may be worms , theres various treatment for cocci  what you use is your choice :) however if my bird i would isolate and worm first , but this in my opinon is treating blind i know you havent found a good avian vet in your area perhaps a club member would point you in the right dirrection ,

Asha there are tactfull ways in which you can give advice and im not arguing that in nature a ill bird is suppressed as no medicines available and so its survival of the fitest , however this bird has proved its self and Josh would like to save it , the facts are these birds have previously had a high cocci count and may of flaired up as a result of the moult , stress brings on secondary illness. So if you said well Josh fairest thing to do it move this bird on because its constituion is compromised and will be a gateway for illness in your curent flock the young lad may have viewed your post with some merit . Hope you sort it Josh ;)

that just about sums it up on all counts.....i thought worms but if he'd had them tested..it should have shown. when i started i used piprazine wormer and was allways worming/cocci...then i switched wormers and got on alot better. i don't think piprazine does hairworm so perhaps that was my problem

Cheers Mark, are you saying that cocci isnt present in most lofts and i have a problem and i can only keep the count low or can i eradicate it? I have started the worming process on Tuesday proir to breeding.  As for a good avain vet in the area, dont have much choice in that there isnt 1 locally. I have given the bird a sesqui tablet and will see if there is any improvemnt in the next few days when the treatments have had chance to work.

Thanks again

Josh

What treatments are everyone using for cocci canker and worms? I have already wormed with harkers, but not treated for canker and cocci yet, although have used aviform ultimate, without much sucess.

Thanks

all birds have cocci its just the level of cocci or canker that your controling so in periods of stress these levels can get higher that the bird can cope with in outbreaks of high counts birds produce white blood cells to help fight the increase but some times birds need an asisting via medication  , the thing with microscopes and test kits it can show you the diseases ectra but its a good vet that can give you the right thing to treat with ;) so yes your right with canker and cocci theres no cure your reducing the count for the birds to a level there natural immune system can cope with ;)

last time i treat for cocci it was amprollium , worms sparkon i believe although the liquid wormer seems to be a better way to me ;) and canker Ronizole , but it's better to try seeking medications with different ingredients then the birds dont get used to them and get resistant  :)

yes Mark or the bacteria become resistant to the treatment, like rats and poison lol

sometimes they can get yeast in the crop and seem not to be digesting the food quickly/or normal/ cider vinegar in water at the rate of two soup spoons to two litres of waterfor a few days .sometimes an odd bird does not look 100% ive gave it some epsom salts straight down throat .

Cheers mate. Very helpful and surely cant cause any harm. I have used cider vinegar and garlic in the water in past, but not for a week or so as i have been worming.

Josh it seems to me your banging plenty of crap into your birds, maybe your going over the top with medication/

Although s you say many on here have vast experience, doesn`t mean to say they are given you good advice,i`m not trying to be nasty, just telling how it is. ;)

joshdonlan you say its a stockbird lagging in the moult, if it still had 2 or 3 flights to go I would be very concerned, on the other hand if the last flight is just pushing through this sometimes can knock a pigeon back for a day or two.

have to agree, mature pigeons should be through the moult

As for how far in the moult the bird is, it still looks scraggy, with head feathers still just showing.

Asha, i see where your coming from, but believe me id listen to them over you any day.  ;D

Guys i dont think its a matter of life or death. The birds looking a bit scraggy and a wee bit thin, not down to skin and bones, but not in the condition i would want it to be in.

Why bother josh, bin it,the moult`s natures anwser to find the weaklings,go against nature ,and she will take her revenge later. ;)

Well idiot or not, he does have a lot of basic sense there. Mind everyone to their own.

Get a bottle of tonic from Tescos / a pick me up and add to the drinkers.

A mite dear at £2 odd, but well worth it.

Feed  Tic beans or at least maples only with 3 peanuts a day .... definately no more. If not vastly improved... then often your first lose is your best lose. JMO

Josh.your birds should be looking magnificent at this time, sparkling, even if 1or maybe2 flights to go,if she/he isn`t, nature has helped you,it has shown you a weakness, the rest is up to you.

We all keep to much rubbish ,you should be looking for something to kill evertime you entered your loft this autumn,i know it seems hard but it`s the only way.

And thank you kindly foryour last post. :)

We don't believe in culling birds just because they are a bit off or something happens to them but having met a few fanciers now I think we are in the minority, I have found the majority of them cull at the first signs of any weakness :-/

u would think this time of year with your birds not coming in contact with anyone elses birds they would be in good nick me personally i would isolate the bird and let nature take its cause .u only want birds with a good imune system.me myself im to soft to cull even though u know it best for both of u.good luck
