Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help.  I have a hen who seems to have a soft growth (getting bigger) in her abdoman. A fellow fancier told me a remedy yesterday but I have forgotten the name. He said it is canker in the abdomen and is easily treatable. But I cant seem to recall the name. Anybody have any ideas?

Cheers

you can try this for a canker nodule,

• Give electrolytes in water

• Treat bird with 3 drops Baytril twice daily

• Treat bird with 1 tablet of Spartrix or a 1/4 Flagyl tablet or 0.5 ml Flagyl syrup once daily

• Separate unwell bird from loft mates

Medications Available

Any one of a group of medications called nitro imidazoles are effective against trichomonads. There are four commonly in use:

1. Dimetradazole - The common brand name here is Emtryl, available as a water-soluble powder. Dimetradazole was the first nitro imidazole available and is still an effective drug, although trichomonad resistance to it in some areas is a problem because it has been used for the longest. It must be used with care as it has a narrow safety margin. Overdose leads to a reversible loss of balance and coordination and, in high doses, death. The medication can interfere with sperm production in cocks, leading to a temporary infertility, and so is not recommended for use during breeding. The usual dose is 1 teaspoon (3 grams) to 4½ - 8 litres of water. Lower dose rates should be used in stock birds feeding youngsters and during hot weather when water intake increases and evaporation occurs from drinkers, increasing the concentration of the medication.

2. Carnadazole - The common brand name here is Spartrix. It is only available in tablet form. It has a wide safety margin and is very useful for individual bird dosing, particularly youngsters in the nest. The dose is one 10-mg tablet daily.

3. Metronidazole - The common brand name is Flagyl. This is available as a water-soluble syrup and as tablets in a variety of strengths. It is very economical, with the tablets being useful to dose individual birds. Individual birds are given ¼ of a 200-mg Flagyl tablet once daily. Flagyl syrup is water soluble and is given at the dose of 5 - 10 ml per litre but is very sugary and not very palatable to the birds.

4. Ronidazole - This is available as a water-soluble powder under a number of brand names world-wide, including Ridsol-S, Turbosole, Tricho-Plus and Ronivet. The usual strength used is 10%. The dose at this strength is ½ teaspoon per litre. Weaker preparations are available but the birds need to be treated longer with these. The drug is very bitter so preparations stronger than 10% tend to be unpalatable to the birds. It has a very wide safety margin and is safe to use during breeding, racing and moulting. World-wide, ronidazole is the current medication of choice to treat canker. However, in some countries it is not available for use in pigeons, authorities being concerned that resistant organisms may develop. As the drug is used in food-producing animals such as pigs, its use is reserved for these.

In any canker-control program, it is often best to rotate between at least two of these medications in order to decrease the chance of a resistant trichomonad strain developing. Currently, ronidazole-based preparations are used as the primary treatment because of their effectiveness and wide safety margin, but it is a good idea to swap to one of the other available drugs every third or fourth treatment.

you dont need  to have thrush,  a gum boil,  a cut,  an mouth ulcer,    any type  wound as it is metronidizonal as  flagyl  is only a company name  for it

and there are hundreds of companies with there own name for it the most your doctor will give you is a 1  week course , and you will need them yer self if he gave you them ;D ;)

I use to give the birds flagyl tablets, never had any problem with canker, i was very please with the health, they arent easy to come by now, so its time to move onto something else if the ugly mother raises its head.  ;)

You know, talking about taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut! Gosh, even placing a speck of Nystan on the inner beak clears Canker. Never mind treating proper. Baytril.... I've been waylaid since last two weeks nigh, and even a doctor would think of using baytril on me!

Thousands multiplied by umpteen remedies for 99.9999999999999999999999999 things that will work for 99.99999999999999999999999999999 things without even thinking of Baytril etc. etc.

Streuth no blumming wonder our pigeon are just mainly now 'Mock ups' cluttering up the town centres'!

P.S It's hard to get because....... it is on prescription because................ Not so you can get the likes through the back door, but because it can, will and does more harm than good when not used by a Vet etc who KNOWS what they are doing!!!!

Gosh lilly white insided pigeons with no immune systems and or resemblance to what instincs it should have are sadly an every day occurrance of losing every time a training  / or race basket is opened.

All looking the 'Sellers' part externally... crap inside, head and body.

And this is why 31.000 members today send a vast amount more that 131,000 did 50 years ago!

Of course, and breed winners.... so what has Baytril got to do with that? :-/ :-/ :-/

So you are saying that I need to amputate a arm to fix a strained wrist eh! :o :o :o

canker use to just have a cotton match stick... or just a match to  fix it.... still would.

Am saying that use the least to cure.

Besides, as to your above post, if a birds hasn't, got canker etc. it won't EVER win a race, now there is a fact!

Also so many of what is 'Cured' 'Not Needed' are in themselve very important to the whole make up of the bird!!! Gosh  :o :o

that is why such as canker HAS to keep coming back.... and one strains, stresses the system via keep eradicating so called Ailments and Bad bacteria etc.

If it's bad, the bird it's self will tell you.

And don't forget, a mild form of canker it's self is NEEDED in a pigeon - THAT'S why it keeps returning - because it forms a defence, is a detterent against more effective, not want ailments, bateria's and such!

That is whay mongrels wander the streets healthy, why Parra etc. doesn't harm them.... whilst you bunged up, over jabbed pedigrees dies from i and much more.

the immune system has a very fragilel make up, but is tremedous for doing what it does. Sure, from time to time, often through others silly actions - like using Baytril etc. our birds need a helping hand.... seldom though! Good bird, stay healthy, and don't get ill! If some do, and others aren't effected, then 'Hello there' something knocking inside the head yet!!! :o

Pss. it means their constitution is to shot... probably too mucj Flagil / Baytril etc. and need geting shot off. Sure go and win a 'Paper bag' race with them. Sell them of quick, and le more of there off spring join them littering up our dialect buildings!
