  13. The Joe Murphy Column This weekend is the Scottish National Gold Cup race from Reims and is the main event in the pigeon racing calendar. I remember when as a young boy how my late father and the members of his local club were so excited at the thought of timing in a bird from the Rennes national. This was a great achievement just to get a bird home never mind making the open result. One of my GREATEST treasures in the pigeon sport is the gift of the Chiming Clock (see photo) presented by the SNFC to the won 1st open SNFC Rennes 1937 the famous John Kirkpatrick of Annan. His champion pigeon was called ‘Coronation Express’ (see photograph) and she was flying 481 miles against 4119 birds and recording a velocity of 1559. Kirkpatrick’s nephew John Smith met up with Margaret and I a few years ago and he presented this wonderful piece of Scottish national history to me in the event that I will pass this onto Kevin when the time is right. I have tried to take a photograph of the little plaque to show readers the inscription on this (see photo). Another part of the Gold Cup history was the 1961 winners of the race these being Johnny & Paul Dora of Arbroath (where Kevin lives now) with their chequer known as ‘The Fifer’. I have looked through my archives for a photographs of this great pigeon who flew 583 miles from Rennes doing a velocity of 1410 competing against 5273 birds (wish we had entries like this nowadays for the Gold Cup race) I would like to wish all Scottish national members taking part in this great race all the very best and may the best pigeon win, good luck to you all. Lost Pigeon I spoke a couple of weeks ago about helping out an Irish fanciers Liam Paisley from Dublin who had one of his birds reported over on the Isle of Arran. Ian Noble collected the bird and I arranged for Liam to contact him and he emailed saying; ‘Hi Joe, I spoke to Ian last night and he is a real gentleman. He is going to give the bird to the Irish Munster federation who are racing from Hamilton next week and they will bring it back over for me. Thanks again for everything you have done and may I wish you and your family all the best yours in sport Liam’. My thanks to Ian Noble for all his assistance and we both agreed that it is only right to help out a fellow fancier as you never know when you might need a kindness returned. Results Last weekend was a total washout with the bad weather and the majority of federations did not hold a race over the weekend. However some of the press officers have forwarded in some later results and these are as follows. Ayrshire North Road Federation was racing from Portlethen on 4th June with 30 members sending 287 pigeons these were liberated at 10-30 am into a North wind. Valley North Club winner and topping the Federation is Ian Scope with a winning velocity of 1456 his pigeon is a 2 year old chequer cock and was bred by Axe Brothers with both sire and dam from Delbar origin. Carrick Club winner and 3rd Federation are raced by Jamieson & Cameron and was doing 1441 they timed a 2 year old blue hen, whose sire was a gift pigeon from club secretary John Cannon. The dam was from Jeff Greenway of Ireland from his Leo Hermans bloodlines. As a matter of interest she won 1st club last week from Montrose. Mauchline Club winner and 6th federation on 1413 is Kory Galloway who timed a yearling blue cock bred by Gerald Delaney of Northern Ireland. Kory doesn’t have a pedigree for this pigeon as he was under express instructions that it must be raced. Cumnock Club is won by J MacKenzie who also wins 21st federation doing a velocity of 1322. His pigeon is a 2 year old red hen home bred sire is from Father Eddie McGhee and the dame is from his own Kirkpatrick origins. As a matter of interest she is the same way bred as last year’s 1st Lerwick winner and is a very steady pigeon. East of Scotland Federation News from press officer John Baillie of Tranent who reveals that the Newark race was cancelled due to the poor weather conditions for the weekend. However congratulations must go to Jimmy Jackson of Dunbar who topped Section B from the Scottish National Flying Club inland race from Buckingham to win 5th open (well done Jimmy Joe M). Members within Prestonpans HS took the following positions; with Tom & Scott McEwen winning 1st East of Scotland Federation, 10th section B and 42nd open. They also took the following places 15th section B 64th open: 72nd section B 205th open and 91st section B 257th open (great results Tom & Scott Joe M). Next we have John Bird who timed in birds take the following positions 14th section B 63rd open, 31st section B 93rd open, 33rd section B 102nd open and his 4th bird winning 59th section B 179th open. (Well done John B Joe M). Another consistent flier this year is Tam Waddell who wins 55th section B 170th open followed by 95th section B 263rd open. R & J Combe take 285th open: with others members from the Federation on the result these being Jim McNeil of Tranent; Dougie Grieve our federation President; Tucker Watt and Mr & Mrs Burgess so well done to them all yours John B’. Fife Federation Glenrothes & Leslie PC news from Rosie Armit who sent in the Buckingham federation race result with 54 birds being entered. 1st is M McMurchie with a velocity of 1340.111 with a 4 year old hen flown celibate. Her sire is a Marijke Vink and her dam is a daughter of ‘Mr Blue Ace’ of all Holland Pieter Veenstra. 2nd was Mick again with a 3 year old hen flown celibate. Her breeding is from Bruce McKenzie of Dundee. 3rd is Ian Chalmers on 1301 with a 4 year old red cock sent sitting 8 day eggs and feeding a big young bird. His breeding is Jock Duncan crossed Bob Lyle; he has already won 3rd club 168th open SNFC; 24th fed Maidstone in 2014 and 142nd open, 48th section C SNFC Billericay in 2015. This race was kindly sponsored by Jim Kinnes of Leslie with Mick winning the £50. North of Scotland Federation Buckie RPC news from Gavin Russell who informs us that 4 members sent 15 birds to Worksop on 5th of June flying approximately 309 miles; 1st club 9th west section 11th federation from 523 birds doing a velocity of 1236 is Gavin Russell with a 2 year old blue bar cock flying natural. His sire and dam are from the Gyselbrechts family and this is this birds 2nd win this year. 2nd club 12th west section and 15th federation won a velocity of 1225 is John Cumming with a yearling blue bar cock flying roundabout. His sire and dame are Wildermeersch from John Strachan of Fraserburgh. This has been John’s most consistent bird all season. In 3rd club 19th west section 26th federation on a velocity of 1214 is Ian Coull with a 2 year old blue pied flying natural. Sire and dam are from Paul Woolliss of Grimsby. J Cummings wins the yearling trophy and G Russell won the pools: however returns were a little ‘Spare’ on the day. Joe’s Joke A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then, he saw an envelope, propped up prominently on the pillow. It was addressed, 'Dad'. With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands: "Dear Dad, It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend, because I wanted to avoid a scene with you and mom. I've found real passion with Stacy. She is so nice, but I knew you would not approve of her because of all her piercing's, tattoos, her tight motorcycle clothes, and because she is so much older than I am. But it's not only the passion, Dad. She's pregnant. Stacy said that we will be very happy. She owns a trailer in the woods, and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We'll be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people in the commune for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so that Stacy can get better. She sure deserves it! Don't worry Dad, I'm 15 and I know how to take care of myself. Someday, I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your many grandchildren. With love, your son, Joshua P.S. Dad, none of the above is true. I'm over at Jason's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the school report that's on the kitchen table. Call when it is safe for me to come home!"
