The Joe Murphy Column I was reading a couple of interesting stories in the newspaper that may captivate some fancier’s minds. For example we as pigeon fanciers have wondered for years how our birds manage to find their way home and I found the following very intriguing. Scientists investigating how migrating birds know where they are going have discovered that proteins produces in the retina and nerve cells running from the eye to the brain are magnetic and act as a compass, allowing birds and other migrating animals to sense the direction they are travelling in. They also cleverly use the position of the sun and stars to navigate. What a shame it doesn’t seem to work for humans. My second story concerns the late Marilyn Munroe who was supposed to be fascinated with birds. This came about from an incident where the Hollywood actress saved some pigeons from captivity in New York’s Central Park. Marilyn went over one night and she came upon 2 young boys where capturing the pigeons, trapping the birds in nets and then caging them. She asked the young lads why they were doing this, and they informed her that they made money by catching pigeons and selling them to a meat market for 50 cents apiece. Marilyn then counted the pigeons thrashing desperately about the cage, and asked the boys: ‘If I give you the money, will you free the birds?’ They agreed, the cage was opened, and the pigeons took their leave. Marilyn then arranged to meet the boys on the nights they worked catching and caging the pigeons and she would pay them for the birds, and then watch as they were released back into the air over the East River. Her affiliation for birds was reinforced by the celebrated photo shoot that she did with Cecil Beaton, who was renowned for his beautiful portraits of Hollywood stars, such as Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo and Elizabeth Taylor. With the possibility that he would be the designer of Monroe’s dresses for the upcoming film The Prince and the Showgirl. Beaton arranged a photography sitting in his suite in the Ambassador Hotel on February 22, 1956, and took several memorable shots of Marilyn with a stuffed bird. Munroe was in playful mood which enabled Beaton to get some of the most natural shots of the star ever taken. The session produced one of Monroe’s favourite portraits, holding the bird, which hung in her New York apartment that she shared with her 3rd husband, the playwright Arthur Miller. Congratulations go to Jimmy on an excellent start to your season. Very slow returns were the order of the day but most well prepared fanciers had fairly good returns. Thanks to our new race controller Brian McKelvie and conveyers Jimmy Rice and Kenny Young for a good start to the season, well done guys keep up the good work. That's it for week one Joe kindest regards Mark’. Good SNFC Birds I start this week with Davie Jamieson of East Calder whose chequer cock SU13CA 345 won 3 times in 2015. He won 24th section D 277th open from Billericay a distance of 337 miles, a few weeks later he was sent to the Eastbourne race point a distance of 388 miles and he won 13th section D 209th open. He was then set up for the last old bird race of the season from Clermont a distance of 514 miles and won 1st section D 30th open proving to be a pigeon to look out for in 2016. We now come to a Fife double with both birds winning twice in 2014 and once in 2015, the first is Jim Doig of Cardenden with his blue bar cock SU12F 2448 who won 36th section C 156th open Maidstone in 2014 flying 376 miles, he then went to Clermont a distance of 526 miles and won 1st section C 3rd open. Then last year he was entered into the Billericay race point a distance of 349 miles and won 66th section C 208th open. Next we come to Fife federation vice president Jocky Scott of Kennoway with his chequer hen SU12F 6009 who flew the same race programme and distance as Jim Doig cock in 2014 winning 74th section C 307th open from Maidstone and then 20th section C 83rd open Clermont. In 2015 he was sent to Portsmouth a distance of 380 miles and won 49th section C 174th open. We wish Jim and Jock all the very best with their birds in 2016. Joe’s Joke Paddy and Mick were walking along a street in London. Paddy looked in one of ‎the shop windows and saw a sign that caught his eye. The sign read..."Suits £5.00 each, Shirts £3.00 each, Trousers £4.50 per pair". Paddy said to his pal "Mick look at these prices! We could buy a whole lot of those and when we get back to Ireland we could make a fortune. Now when we go in you stay quiet, okay? Let me do all da talking cause if they hear our accents, they might think we're thicko's from Ireland and try to screw us. I'll put on me best English accent." "Roight y'are Paddy, I'll keep me mouth shut, so I will. You do all da business" said Mick. They go in and Paddy says in a posh voice "Hello my good man. I'll take 50 suits at £5.00 each, 100 shirts at £3.00 each and 50 pairs of trousers at £4.50 each. And you’ll back up me truck ready to load 'em on, so ‎I will". The owner of the shop said quietly "You're from Ireland aren't you?" "Well yes" said a surprised Paddy. "What gave it away?" The owner replied ‘This is a dry cleaners.’ Please continue to keep the news flowing; to Joe Murphy Mystical Rose Cottage 2 Flutorum Avenue Thornton by Kirkcaldy KY1 4BD or phone 01592 770331 or Email to joejmurphy1@gmail.com REMEMBER THE J IN THE MIDDLE or log onto www.elimarpigeons.com www.fancierchat.co.uk and www.pigeon-chat.co.uk also www.pigeonbasics.com who wish my weekly contribution portfolio on pigeon topics from Scotland. © Compiled by Joe Murphy
