Archie I think your looking a little to deep into things pigeons have been racing for donkeys years as you know against bigger birdages then today. People in my mind cannot blame the darkness system as in my mind people been doing it for around 12 years or more. You hear especially the older fanciers sending young birds still squeaking and winning the races, they must have had the ultimate stress, but they lasted the whole season. Especially over the last three years, I've heard fanciers say they have young bird sickness but sent the ones that looked alright, which I know happens in clubs up and down the country. Then blame the losses they have received on the convoyers.

He could also be overweight chances are if paired in April he'd fill, I'd cut the feathers around his vent even let him be a foster for one round it all helps

Detective put a trap like the red rose starter lofts on the 6 x 4 you won't regret it

Ghost how long did you leave the lights on before pairing? In winter breeding I've found lights and the hens being the right weight a must, to get them laying between 7-10 days. If not enough light and slightly fat, they will go ten days and over.

It's not only the training, it's also the health that many people are sending there birds in regarding there losses

It is dependent on which honey you use. It must be remembered honey is made of 3 sugars, and the glycemic value is dependent on which honey you use. On an average it is scientifically proven honey has the same affect as White sugar, but in a smaller level in comparison. The more refined the honey the higher the gi

It could possibly be due to a draft. I am of the opinion with Owen, that the red Rose starter lofts, are excellent in all aspects and keeps birds in excellent health.

How would a pencil blue affect genetics?
-
Is there any genetics for the Schalie or Slateys as there sometimes called? Reason for asking is my loft never had any Slateys however they keep appearing in a certain line of my pigeons, and turn out to be good performers. Is it Genetics or a throwback to a pigeon in there ancestry going back to 1980s?

Scott you say they've had a bit to eat and fly out are you putting there feed in a hopper or in there boxes to do this? As the others are playing about on the roofs I'd also stop doing this and not place any feed in the loft until they are all in the loft, bad habits no thought of your own are being encouraged. Ideally it would be good if a local fancier could take you under his wing.

3 dessert spoons usually is 1 1/2 ounces as Andy says, but will also vary. It is far to much for birds sitting around and nearly or should have completed there moult. You have no routine on when you let them out by the sound of it is also a problem. This time of year id cut back and feed once a day an ounce a pigeon or if your worried there not getting enough I'd have 25% barley in your mix and feed them by hand, once they start to be selective with the grains they have had there fill and should receive no more. But remember a little at a time. Scott I also thought you had no birds?

Brian, how effective do you feel the 3 in 1 treatments are?

What family of birds are they?

Closest weekend to the first weekend in February for us. Although it's very mild at the moment, It's constantly raining, and I do not like entering the lofts that much as the dampness travels with your shoes, and breeding requires a lot of in and outs. We have done the most important thing the beginning of November and that was a ten day treatment against paratyphoid. We will treat for canker when we pair and they are sitting. Cannot remember the last time we treated for cocci or worms.

Personally we like to bring them down with a barley or depurative mixture, then 7 to 14 days prior to pairing we will build them on a rising plain, increasing the depth of the mixture with a breeding mix. Once laid we'd go on a 50/50 basis, and 5 days before the first eggs hatch in the section they will receive 100% breeding mixture, to help with there nutritional value to produce there crop milk. Once hatched our breeders will be fed 4 times a day with 4 different mixes.
