  1. The average weight this week was 16.6oz, one cock put on a dramtic weight increase and had to weigh him actually 3 times to make sure in my mind the scales were right. http://ouncestograms.com The above site ive found to be a blessing this year, especially when explaining to people how much i feed and how much i would for particular situations.
  2. I know that has to be done with doxycyline powder
  3. I start looking by day 5, but by day 7 i expect the young birds to be rung, any day after that and the legs should be too big to get a ring on.
  4. Sorry to say it but if your looking to ring young birds at ten days old both young birds are weaklings.
  5. Essex and kent amal from wetherby, was a stinker of a race for the whole organisation, big losses and a gappy race, but organisations liberated later in the day made good time. We ended up 6th, which wasnt too sad, but i am dissappointed in the team this week, as they were bouncing, but on how the race panned out, i will not rush things, if i am disappointed next week i will send of a vetinery test. Birds look well and was a beehive of activity this morning. Good news this week was that a fancier on the site who i suggested a feeding system to won his club beating 491 birds so hopefully that continues for him.
  6. From the experiement ive gathered a number of things, and a lot of things need to be taken into consideration, the week of the first race i did infact weigh every day up till friday, and surprisingly birds can actually lose weight, even on the build up. The biggest factor of weight ive found is the work rate. I found when i would train for the whole week leading upto the race the birds could lose 1/2oz to 3/4oz in body weight leading upto the race. Also if you weighed at different times of the day it could be different weights. So now the birds are weighed at 6.30am every Tuesday. Reason why i do it so early is that their crops are empty and tey shouldnt have had a drink by then. You will find some pigeons dont put on any weight week after week they stay consistent. Or you will find some have put on and some have lost. It is all an experiement, where hopefully i can come to some conclusive data in my own mind at least. From a breif conversation Tony C had with bernie bennett on my behalf he took the weighing to the next level even measuring their water intake ect, so a conversation with bern will be arranged to see his view and the findings his found. Im always up to learn something hence why i started the experiment, to see if i can get something out of it.
  7. Hi tony I was told by 3 sources who use the method of weighing this was the ideal day, as the birds should have recovered their body from their previous flight. It suits me also as i dont want to create any stress closer to saturday also. Kind regards
  8. Noticed over the last few days the cocks wattles getting whiter and whiter, and the shine on their neck becoming more dominant. Lets hope its a good sign for the weekend. With the wind on the turn this saturday looks to be a sticky race for north roaders which they havent had to face this year, apart from the first week but with the distance they was at then it never was a test. This week being at 177 miles in an essex and kent amalgamtion and forecast saying south easterly wind i suspect a fly over 4 hours will be the oder of the day. Will the cocks beat the hens this week? Im not overly fused cock or hen as long as i can get one on the job and up with the leaders. The young birds are still flying very strong, and the basket will have to come out for them soon at a very short distance. The good thing is they are using the traps on the new loft and they listen to us very well. They are still on the sedochol and natraline combination and are moulting very well everyday there appearances change.
  9. Out and out distance birds i have no experience with peter, as i want more of a middle distance bird who can perform at most discplines. However i remember listening to one of the best distance fanciers in the uk with out and out distance birds say...when i take my birds 20 miles they take 5 days to come home, when i race them at 100 miles they take 5 days to come home, but when i send them 500 miles plus they are their on the day.....i hope they turn in for u mate but regarding respiratory i cant see anything from your text that said you treated for it, so was wondering why you said you could count that out?
  10. No buddy i havent been weighing hens....i have only been weighing cocks. Hens from conversations must be much lower around 14.5 to 15oz range. With cocks being from 16 to 16.5oz range.
  11. Todays average weight for the birds is 16.5 ounces, now this will test the theory as discussions ive had with fanciers they have stated this is the ideal weight but the proof will be in the pudding so to speak, and we will see.
  12. Thanks for your pm phil, however you can find these lists in every squils year book and on google and would take a long time for me to type that all out
  13. 9th, 16th and 18th federation
  14. 3 yards off the pace this week to finish 4th in newham against 280, and 7th in custom house against 116, 3 yards is next to nothing so i cant be dispondent, we cant win em all and next week is another week. 3 of last weeks 5 hens were my first pigeons again.....i should feature high up in the fed but will confirm on monday Its been 4 weeks since i nazalined the pigeons so they will get done sunday
  15. East london up at newark 11am ne wind
  16. Yes as much as they want....however what quantities are u feeding leading upto a thursday, as mine will give or take a feed on a friday and if they do its very little, although they are ince again offered as much as they want.
  17. Sue do you not feed ad lib on a thursday anyway?
  18. As i said neila, depurative has to be in the composition. I wouldnt go for gerry, as i dont want the maize in the mixture prior to basketing, as i want the birds to take that as first choice grain while being fed in the baskets.
  19. Hi Neila No, the quantity is actually huge in number prior to basketing, but i mean light as in grains....i wouldnt go as far as using barley, but a depurative mixture will be in the composition.
  20. Youngsters put in another food effort today, 1hr 15 minutes. My eye on the game switched off slightly with them and i have ran out of barley, so their percentage of grain will be at 100% at least until tuesday, when is the earliest i can travel to get the quality of barley i am happy with. I will pick up a number of bags of just versele laga barley. As many know i dont have to visit stores very often as i buy my racing mixtures in bulck and as one batch. This year having seperate sections for the racers when the combine races come along, the team will be fed entirely differently. Especially the team that isnt going to the races over 300 miles, the week they stay at home they will be put onto 100% barley at only an ounce each, and then built up the following week again on the race system. This is something ive never been able to do previously as they had to be in the same section and feeding communally they all had to be fed the same. A previous yearling winner went missing from the loft today, he was the said cock that i said a few posts back put on 9 gramms this week. I thought the worst, and thought percy may have grabbed him, he wasnt at the lofts by the time i left. However speaking to dad this afternoon he told me he returned 3 hours later, trapped onto the loft roof and was roaring his head off. God knows where he had been but glad his back amongst the team as i felt he may have been dead.
  21. Eastcoaster, my way of feeding for distance is much like geoff kirkland, a few days before sending the feed is light, to give them appetite and to make sure they eat in the basket with vigour. Another thing to consider is the distance runners you dont see them carry an ounce of fat they are lean, but what they eat in prep for the events a few days before makes them excel. Doing it this way has served me well without boring you with any performances. But all roads lead to rome for sure.
  22. Get to bed As i say eastcoaster its an experiement im doing this season so i canny really five you an answer on that, but im sure their will be birds ill be sending at the same weight or similar but my feeding over 300 miles changes, so i cannot really comment until that time comes and they are weighed
  23. Its not only for short racing eastcoaster, i will be doing it for distance racing, which we also compete at well. However weighing pigeons is an experiment i am following this year to see if i can link individuals weights to performance. First you must have a set of electronic scales and an empty pigeon carrying box. Put the box on the scales and set to 0. Place your bird in the box, and allow the bird to calm. Take the reading once bird has settled in grams. Then divide its weight in grams by 28 to give you the birds weight in ounces.
