it didnt matter, after i got them in give them a little to eat left them for half hour then darkened them out until it was time to let them out in the afternoon, but open the shutters 15 mins before letting them out,it does keep them from dropping there flights too early and there condition is excellent.also they wont pair up aswell if you keep them flying morning and evening.ive tried darkening cock out aswell but it hasnt made any difference in peformances.

ive done it years ago with widowhood hens,i was beating cocks by doing this, its not new.dave allen wrote a book "winning with hens " they said it was a new system,a friend of mine was doing it ten years before he even wrote the book winning 10x1sts a year with hens ,topping the fed every week sometimes first 4 and winning every open race there was, going back to the question he flagged them 1hr morning 1 hr night but darkened them out when in the loft,i tried this system with 1 hen on widowhood and she went on to win 4x1sts for me beating my own widow cock, one race being my only entry 157 mls.i intend going back to this system in 2008 when i get finally set up 100% in the garden.

andrew your going to sell youngsters off a 1991 pigeon, thats a 15 year old stock bird thats had more sex than most of us in 15 years, are you real,if i had such a good pigeon at that age still filling his eggs i would be looking after him like gold and keeping them for myself, your definatly after the money mate and would definatly want a DNA card prooving that this 91 cock was the sire.Les

pigeons these days are being bred for speed, thus developing wedge shaped pigeons rarther than the long cast birds from years ago,and even these are now capable of winning distance races, you only have to read the results in the B.H.W pigeons are definatly changing by a lot of inbreeding, but on another level were taking a lot of good points away from them by doing this.British fanciers tend to buy a breed in and we then inbreed with them and in a few years they go down the pan,but the belguims dont they are always looking for a good pigeon no matter what breed it is,its us english who run them to the ground with our pure this and pure that, plus i think were loosing the stamina and homing instinct in todays pigeons.Just my views.

again backgarden loft, use to be safe on allotments but these days its to risky, plus you tend to build more and keep more at the allotments, one good thing about allotments you get to have a breather from the missus. ;D ;D

Take a look at it another way ,say make the rings 30 a year, then people would cut there birds down and be more selective, breed better youngsters because we would have to use our nogging, and propably go to the first race with almost a full team of youngsters 1,because the health would be better in the loft 2,there would be no overcrouwding 3,you would be able to see to the birds better and be more focus with them, and there will still be the normal amount going to the 1st race because you hardly wont have lost them.

are they all full ?

agree with mike lycett, you dont need loads of birds to compete with the best,if there good enouth they will win against thousands,i won chelmsford 157 mls a few years ago only sending 1 widowhood hen to the race all pooled up,she came by herself ahead of 2000 plus birds, and got to say mike has put up some very fine performances over the years with his birds.
-
if your birds are good they will beat the big boys,no matter how many they send,i still disagree though that some will send 50 oldbirds just to win a race then openly brag about it and then 2nd place goes to a fancier who sends 10-15 birds.Let the big boys put the money in and let the small lofts take it out. ;D ;D

i know a man who visited jos and was the first to buy them, and he stated that the eyes were crap but the class of the pigeon were great,my sootjen cock what won many first in club and over 15x1sts in 2bird club was out of these birds but the eye on him was the old nut brown eye with no detail or wide circle at all,but he thrashed the pants off my others when raced espacially when there was north winds.

The only pigeons that stood upto these janssens were the jos sootjens,i raced them in 1995 and in 1996 had 18 sootjens come to gether from a 65mls young bird open race ,i waited while the 18th pigeon trapped up and then me and a friend started to time them in,we took the first six in the open and also took a clean sweep with all the prizes and pools, also one cock winning over 10x1sts for me later given to T3 on this site.

what do you think is the key to sucsess in racing?
schouwman71 replied to westy's topic in Racing Pigeons
ime a big believer in routine, without it you will be beat, since working shifts my performances have gone down, you cannot compete with those who dont work as many times you will be beat, unless you have a good routine that suits you & your birds. -
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYONE,TO NEW AND OLD FRIENDS AND EVERYONE ON PIGEONBASICS.

son of "stamvater76" bred in 1988 and in his first years breeding bred a fed winner, only breeding two that year, bred 5 individual winners in 1990 winning the club by 5 mins ,also as yearling they were gaining 2-3 1sts a year on widowhood.g,sire to 1st combine in 2000 from 215mls,altogether breeding 18x1sts direct. This is an old pic took in 1995,wish i still had him.
-
i had a son of stamvater when paired to sheer elegance,he went on to breed 18x1sts individual pigeons and also g.sire to combine winners in one year he bred 5 individual 1st prize winners.
-
yes i think john still imports them,i had a son off schone appie through henk kuiljaars,he was a great red janssen and bred many winners ,found him sat on eggs one morning dead,a sad loss it was,i managed to save the eggs and still have the last son off him.

here are a pair of red fox janssens, the cock is very inbred to vosde byter & schoone vos.
