Often one hear tales of the disastrous dreaded canker. Unseen Killer! ? Well my mate related what happen not so long ago. When - the very rare time and about 12 year back now – When an National was won here about he was 2nd Section, 24th Open National Banff. This was with a dark Chequer cock bird. It was real fit and acted like it had St vitas dance. - Spelling. So about 2 - 3 weeks later he put it into a Lerwick race. It was bouncing and twitch great and clear eyed with white beak and crisp clean wattle etc. A prime specimen of health and he had quietly great hope for he was driving his hen back to nest sitting a big youngster to boot. Any way it was reported and brought back to him dead. It had died in the crate. Shocked, and disappointed he sent it away for an autopsy. Results came back that it was riddled with cancer and that what was killed it! So yes, this Canker in all reality never affected it's ability, not only to race, but to obtain a very high degree of health and fitness.- Of course one can say, argue that without the canker i would have done even better . Who knows? Trouble is that there are 30 just over of Cankers and they very quickly become immune to a treatment, hence why one should / must change the treatment at least after 2 - 3 times tops when curing it. Now this should throw some light onto what exactly are the effects - outside of the very rare case of killing a bird -of canker. It is, and has been well documented that a 'Mild' form of canker is actually very good for a bird, as it stops any other strain from attacking and formulating on the bird. Plus it has no real detrimental effects only good in a mild form. Likewise Gut bacteria. Just who, and how are we, able to deter which are good and which are bad. Seems that they all have a part to play, and the bird are very much dependant up on them all. Yes just via use tap water we clean them out regularly.

I like the House bricks at right angles. These do make great nesting. Easy to keep clean and treat. Though this year I will have nest bowls covered in three layers of paper. These bowls will be treated before being wrapped. Lime power is great too, and Ecoli never a problem regardless of the contradictionary thoughts. - Good to have a sprinkling in water and stirred and left over night as this has a very relaxing and soothing effect. These nest bowls can be changed over very easily and quickly of course. Then cleansd and covered again. I spray with Vykrom or Idonene etc. after I scrub them clean. I ought to buy a second hand dishwasher really for this like so many do - Joyce hates me using her's lol Dried and warm I place the Lime - Garden lime - in and wrapped with the newpaper. I find Page Three is very good for sitting cock birds.

Waas a time when the whole family went and then stay for the entertainment. Seldom was the race winners confirmed till Sunday / Monday even.... the good ole days. Now many don't even want to stay for a little chat! Which isn't good in relationship with landlords whom often feel being used. Personally I found every week - end a pain in the a$re when I would be working week - end nights and NO ONE wanted to, and made excuses, why they couldn't take birds or clocks etc. for me. Yes in that regards Sunday Morning at 11 O'clock would be better, and everyone have a bit of banter and a pint before heading home for their dinner. J.M.O. and expierences.

Many things like Red Mite etc. are easily and quickly got shot of.... and better still so easy to avoid. Place a few beer mats soaked in cresote for instance.Chinese chalk, just draw a line around the bowl, or round the beer mats. Like deep litter, it has very much beneficial benefits. Many a good fancier takes the old droppings and place into any new loft / compartment. Like Lce, these are actually GOOD for the birds! Tis the fancier that moans when basketing others birds ... Be like the Belgium - whom we take note of when it suits, and disregards when it doesn't. They allow the lice to keep the feathers and plummage in tip top condition AND wear smocks etc. Every thing in nature has a purpose. We go angainst it with selfish whims.... at our perils. Lets ask ourselves a simple question if a important race / National or what ever depending on being just outside the top bracket, like in not in first 10 - 20 and being first by allowing nature to have it's way the most likely answer is 'Do as nature'.... but this seems forgotton when the 'Name' is selling products that are suppose to enhance our birds. Remember a fancier chuntering when he basket one of mine with lice. Yes I dominated the race.... and I told him to buy some lice of me next time lol. Mind that was a while back and I do reat a prevention. But then I am in all honesty being hypocritical and pleasing others fads. Now if the birds are stamping at night one may say 'They need their rest' etc. Never see a fit wild bird with out a glistening shine, in prime condition and 'lice'.
