Hen with yb laid again
pigeonman007 replied to pigeonman007's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Cheers lads Will put it back in the bowl tomorrow morning, was just a bit worried if it got mucked on or trampled possibly -
Have a pair rearing a single youngster which is 14days old today, just looked and the hen has laid this evening. Should I let her sit this egg and the next or float them under another hen and let this hen lay again when the yb is away, or just put another bowl in the breeding box so she can lay again in that, have bought the egg inside tonight and replaced with a plastic egg just incase it gets damaged. Will the cock carry on looking after the yb...

High proportion dead in shell

I have clay nestbowls which are on plastic grids. nest material is a small amount of shavings and whatever straw they carry to the bowl. Most made their own nests with the straw, but those that havent I put a good handfull in the bowl and flattened it down for them so the eggs arent touching the clay -
High proportion dead in shell

Theyve had him a good few weeks now, he whines during the day as well and they dont move off the eggs then. A poultry web site I had a read of this evening suggests it may be a vitamin d deficiency particularly if they are dieing a few days before hatching which a few have. -

Only possible disturbance I can think of is next door have a new pup and he has been whigning a lot at night, can hear this from outside the loft, would that be enough to bring them off maybe? -

Yes, thats me. Was advised by a mate to get some parastop just to be on the safe side. Seem to have got over the clear eggs prob now, I trimmed the offending birds and 2nd round of eggs are now fertile -
High proportion dead in shell
pigeonman007 replied to pigeonman007's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Are there any visual symptoms that the parents would be showing? -
All of my that have laid fertile eggs seem to be having problems with dead in shell. Egg is usually ok upto about 12days but then starts to turn bad. A couple got upto chipping but didnt hatch. Out of 6pairs 5 have had 1 dead in shell egg each, the othher pair both eggs dead in shell. The birds are not getting any disturbances at night that would bring them off the eggs, lights dim down over half hr so if they did happen to be off the eggs they have a good while to get back on them. Not sure what I am doing wrong...

Out of interest does the £35 delivery get them delivered to me, or is that just for getting them into the UK? -

Was thinking of the Tournier ybs, are they always grizzles? -
Has anyone bought any ybs from the above in the past, how have you found the service, are they good value? Looking at the ad in BHW this week, tempted to try a few. Can they be sexed at 20days? as there is an option for cocks or hens

Just got back from work and am deligted to find have my first ever pigeon egg hatched out :). Other egg has chipped, but cant hear any noise from it when held to my ear. Hope all is ok. She has only been sitting 18days as well, had thought they take 19days
-
1 of my prs has laid clear eggs, have been sitting 12days now. Should I let them sit their time out or take the eggs and bowl away for a bit etc?
-
Bit of a cheeky one this, I am interested in a couple of pigeons which can be picked up from Blackpool. The are on an auction site and it depends if I get them for my price really. Just wondering if any members from Kent or Sussex area would consider picking the birds up for me, I could collect from them on the Monday or anytime to suit really. I would pay for the birds in advance so no messing around etc, and gladly pay for the pick up as well. Cheers Craig
