I'd like to promote the discussion of ideas to improve, promote, and encourage people to either stay in, or take up the art of pigeon keeping, and perhaps more specifically pigeon racing. Please do not post political items that may take this topic in a different direction; if these items are posted; please refrain from replying to them with similar comments. E.g. You may feel that the adoption of ETS will help the sport; indeed it may, but this isnt a topic for ETS to be discussed. Motivation I'm the webmaster of this site, write a Young Fanciers column in the BHW and (try to) play an active role in making people aware that there are ideas out there, and that they can be implemented successfully for the better of our sport. I'm not writing the previous to receive a pat on the back; I wanted to show that I wish to take some of the ideas posted in reply to this topic to the RPRA, and others for discussion, and hopeful implementation in order to provide a slightly brighter future for our sport than the annual compound 10% loss of membership suggests. To start the debate may I suggest what; role, improvements or changes should be sought to one loft racing to better the future of the sport...

I'm sorry you feel that way about our sport, but some of us are doing things to try and stop the rot, we're not all defeatist. Dont think I need comment on your other remarks :X

"The bottom line is this will be forced on people who want to enjoy there hobby in a certain way (traditional clock and thimble pigeon racing)" 1. There will never be a rule 'you must have ETS'. 2. People who would like to use ETS currently cannot enjoy their hobby in 'a certain way'. "why is the choice of someone who wants to enjoy what is a traditional past time less valid than anyone elses?" I'd rather pigeon racing didnt become a traditional pastime I'd like us to be racing in the 21st century, and into the 22nd century for that matter! How much longer can we lose 10% of our membership year on year, and keep things status quo? "This is nonsense who "helps" the guy catch his birds to take them to the club to have them race marked at the moment Peter? Who helps scrape them out to ensure the disabled fanciers birds are not less healthy than the able bodied fanciers Peter? Explain why timing in (IN THE TERMS OF THE ACT)is so very much more important then?" The competitative sport is about the race; it is a fact that ETS is a benefit to disabled fanciers; re-read Fact 5: "FACT 5 - it will be illegal to discriminate against a disabled person ‘in the way it affords him access to a benefit, facility or service’ and ‘by refusing or deliberately omitting to afford him access to a benefit, facility or service.’" There is a product there to help the disabled fancier, and if ETS or an equal alternative is not implemented, I cant see how we wouldnt be breaking it. Are disabled fanciers banned from buying an automated scraping system? Are they limited so that they couldnt modify their loft to enable them to basket the birds easily? I think not.

Yes you were right, that is one of the options!!

The biggest problem that we face in the UK for adopting ETS is changing the culture of our sport away from those angelic top 5 position cards. Look at some of the results posted on the forum here from the USA. Notice a difference? They credit the top 10% of the birdage as to have 'acheived'. The same is true in Belgium and Holland, they have a 1 in 3, 1 in 5, etc. prize system. Whereas we have the top 5 cards in clubs no matter the size of the field. I remember only a few weeks ago reading through the Fife Fed result from their YB Open, W. Hay, had something like 25 birds on the sheet, using ETS of course, but imagine if he didnt have the system, who would have been the loser? 1. Him of course, his team of birds had put up that great performance, but wouldnt have received the credit. 2. The other competitors; it might seem good for some people to get an artifically high position, but if I knew one of my competitors had a bird to beat me and didnt clock it, I'd feel a cheat for taking the position. I think if people stopped thinking about themselves; I might get a bit further down the result; I might not get that pool money I got because the other guy didnt clock in; and looked at the result representation in a new way; why are you looking at only the top 5? If someone has taken the win, but not got another feather home has he really beaten you? Of course it would be ideal if everyone were going to be able to use the ETS system, but in reality that will never happen, beacuse of loft setup, cost, etc reasons. But by the same token should everyone be on the Widowhood system, or should everyone use stall traps? Its about giving everyone the freedom of choice if they want to use the system, they dont have to!

I'm pretty sure that Bubwith is the one and only liberation site at Selby. Thirsk is another airfield or maybe its the racecourse, I cant quite remember. The UNC use Thirsk as a training spot, and a racepoint for the first young bird races for the longer fliers. Selby is used by the rest of the UNC. I cant remember if a site at Grantham has a slightly different name; I'll look on the map when I can find it :B But if you go to http://www.pigeonbasics.com/liberationweather/ there is some kind of description for all of the RPRA racepoints (probably accurate to start of 2006 season). There are pictures of the Selby (Bubwith) site there too if I remember correctly.
