pat i offten wonderd how the doo men or pals over there handled the troubles must have been hard maybe still is i dont know as my pal tom kelly says the railway club doo men were all mixed but the majority were catholic and all good pals and this is how we were on a sat night the guys would all be talking about the celtic game that day and when i would arrive one them would say right watties in nae mair fitba and that was not because i did not like celtic it was because i did not like football it bored the t ts off me i was there to talk about pigeons and the guys knew and respected that i was into pigeons and talking about them with a great bunch of guys for whom i had great respect no matter who or what they were and thats the way our sport should be imo if anyone is offended by anything ive said im sorry it was not meant to to cause offence to anyone im just telling it as it was with us
-

may i drop down dead if every word this story is not true but i cant help p g my self laughing to this day every time i think of it and its like it happend yesterday in my late teens my doo man pal was big alfs uncle shug he was about ten years older than me and my mentor in those days shug was a jovial giant the dbl of dan blocker hoss cartright out bonanza me i was the size of little joe shug was a catholic im a prod and we were the best of pals anyway we were desparate for a training toss i had just past my test the week before but had no car shug drove a lorry for a living but had no car so i asked my old man if we could borrow his old commer van to train the birds from coalburn my dad says ok if shugs going with you so off we went lib the birds and headed back home down the old duel carrige way shug says get the boot boot down so we can beat them back my boot was to the floor and we were only doing sixty but these old vans only had 80 on the clock anyway after about ten minutes with my foot to the floor we were coming to the long down hill at lesmahagow so i took my foot off the gas oh f k i said somethings wrong the gas pedal was stuck to floor and as we were going down a steep hill we were getting faster f k shug what will i do i said i was s g my self now shug started laughing like a maniac which started me off wha what will i do shug for f k sake man i said laughing and crying at the same time keep close to the grass verge said he what good will that do im jumping out shug said the tears running down his eyes we were noe doing 80 the engine was roaring its head off and we were fast coming to tight bend in the road shug i said who was still laughing we are f k n deed to which he pulled out a set of rosery beads my hand to god and was praying what the f k are you doing man were going to die still laughing he said i know im praying to the holy mary to save me he said what about me ya fenian bassa i said laughing with fear you your f k d ya blue nose bassa laughing his head off we were now 100 yds from the bend and honestly thought we were going to die we had no seat belt and there was no way we could take the bend at this speed shug pulled the hand brake and the cable snaped the smoke was beltching out the wheels with my foot on the brake but nothing slowed us down shug still laughing but now pure white said wattie were f k d pal nice knowing you big man i said wait wait switch it off he said switch what off i shouted turn the f k n key off which i did the van slowed to sixty as we hit the bend which we took on two wheels and rolled to a stop at the bottom of the hill and the two of started laughing with tears in our eyes the big mans gone now but im still here to tell the tale it makes me laugh every time i think of him rip ma big pal

bang on davie time the ones holding grudges moved on or out to better our sport -
no wonder tam a great pigeon your grizzle m8 i agree the about the buzz in the longer races maybe its because the longer you wait the bigger the relief when we get one mixed with thank f k lol
-
aye young george will learn to take what some doo men say with a pinch of salt and bye the way tell that guy hes a bum a f k cause there wis nae good fanciers in blantyre 30 years ago lol
-
i agree with you there sammy as that was the mistake i was making till i started watching the velosities of the later birds and a light went on threw away some great 300 mile pigeons before the penny dropped could have kept me competing in the fed for years but thats the great thing about our sport the answer is there you have to find it as not many will tell you m8
-
very few sprint pigeons can fly the distance unless its a very high velosity george but distance pigeons will hold there own with sprinters if you work them right im afraid if i only kept them for nationals id be bored out my skull like i say if your prepaired to put the work in you can do both its just harder thats all if your birds are good enough your yearling will keep you in hunt in club and fed and gain great experience doing so out to the coast 2yr olds and up over the water im just knocking the guys that use the national as an excuse or reason that they get beat in the club because its bull s t and george rankin is the proof in the pudding winning from 60 to 600 miles and mid week sprints to just like me george and gareth put the work in to win them all no im a distance man excuses and never tried to take any fancier down when he got beat by saying its weans races
-
thanks tam we have all seen and heard it im not knocking the guys that only keep pigeons to fly nationals just the ones that use it as an excuse for not winning in the club or fed and try to demean those that do as i say if your willing to work you can do both thats all
-
of course you do sam we all do if we are honest m8 we all want to win the last 4 and score in nationals but theres no reason why we cant do both why keep a loft of doos and only send 3or4 to the gold cup wheres the rest and if you dont get one youve done nothing as i say there may come a day when i cant be bothered to try and win early races but when that day comes i will not try and take anything away from the guys that win them with hard work and effort and down grade the races the win to weans races because i cant be bothered its insulting to the guys that work hard to win them imo how many weans races has the macs won
-
aye there the weans races as they call them george but watch the same guys change there tune when they win a few its aye there in good order a new id get that one p h if they only go to the races to get birds fit why pool and get a clock set m8 dont let them kid ye george there just as happy as me when they win them pal and like i said all there birds are not going to nationals whats the rest of there team doing my birds are all distance birds no sprinters here m8 but everyone to there own i know of a real good distance man that chapped a clock setters door at 11 oclock at night to get his clock checked when he found out he might be winning kelso 60 miles the clock setter chased him he had the same patter when he was winning the early ones it was i it was a good race but when others won it suddenly became the weans races up to 200 miles lol im not saying that all the distance guys are like that but we all know plenty who are im happy to win any race as there all hard to win but im not a distance man im a pigeon man how many so called distance men do you know that put there yb on darkness why do that if your not trying to win heard it all before to long in tooth to kidded now george good luck this year pal

like andy if i stop getting the buzz when i see that first bird landing il pack it in but i differ in the fact i only buy old stock birds for a few reasons one they dont get to that age for nothing two i know what im buying and three i trust the man i buy them from and also as they get older the price comes down all my best birds have been bred from cocks between 8 and 17 years old and were bought when they were 8 9 10 and 11 years old when i bought them as for timing in nationals its great to get one but theres no way i would be keeping 30 or 40 pigeons for five races a year it would be so much easier for me if i did but theres a full season of races that i enjoy in club and fed so i use my latebreds and yearlings for this and my old birds can go to the nationals its much more work but i enjoy it and its a long season this im a distance man is crap imo an excuse for not winning whats there yearlings and birds that dont go to the nationals doing and i only fly distance bred pigeons from 60 to 500miles plus maybe as i get older and my health fails and cant work the birds anymore i might consider keeping them for five races but untill i cant walk or drive im out to win in all races i compete in but thats just the way i am

we seem to be getting bit stale and bogged down with the politics side of the sport guys so here is a we interest to get us back on the subject we care most about pigeons every now and then a pigeon will do something out of the ordinary or different which if you are watching you will pick up on you can play on this we difference to kid the bird or just let the bird carry on kidding its self for instance the wee yearling hen that was 11 th open clermont was on the open bowl during the day and was flying out the loft up and over some 40 foot trees landing on waste ground picking up a twig up and over the trees and back to the loft this hen did this for weeks all day every day and i would take half the nest away every few days as it was getting far to big we have all seen cocks keen on building nests but i had never seen a hen so keen on building which made up my mind to send a yearling to 521 miles and she gave me a great effort another was a yrl late bred hen it was a hard newark race 220 odd miles and had sent my late breds with the intention of stoping them after newark as i waited on the birds i could see a pied coming from the noth east beat i thought coming from that direction the droped through the sputnic on to the ets pad then through the small hole into the loft after 10 mins i only had the one and walked to the loft to have a look at which late bred it was but i could not see her in the loft i was baffled were did she go i checked the other sections in case id been mistaken about which section she went in but i saw her go in the middle i went back to the ets clock was i dreaming no the hen was timed another bird landed and went in the middle section it was a lb cock i went back to the loft and the lb cock was gone what the f k was happening all the nest boxes were empty where were they then i heard the cooing my drinker sat on a plastic bottle crate there was a four inch gap in each side for hand grips and they had squezed under when i went with the clock the hen was 2nd club 2 section to my pal billy 99 my intention was to stop the latebreds at newark but it was the yearling derby from leicester 260 miles the next week the wee hen layed her 1st ever egg on the sunday and the sec on the tuesday on the friday at basketing time i was going through the yearlings trying to pick my poolers when the wee latebred hen came out for a pick of seed id put down i picked her up she was in great order kidding her self in her own wee world under the crate i sent her all pools club and fed she was 1st club 2nd sect yearling derby winning over 800 pounds club and fed i could tell you a few more but i would like you guys to tell us of birds doing something different and going on to put up a good performance dont be shy now

sorry i just cant get my head around trying to get our birds to fly on from 5 and 6 hundred miles then sending them with a big convoy flying hundreds of miles shorter a tired bird will be temted to go down if most of the batch there in is breaking for there lofts en route as for joint libs they only benifit the birds if there all flying into the one area or they get dragged all over the country time we were thinking of the birds not the costs imo
