i had this come from someone i forwarded our link too and it makes intresting reading We have a Hen Sparrow Hawk, or its successor, that has been resident in the winter on one of our eaves beams for ten years or so now. The first sign was a lot of pellets like owl pellets on the ground with the droppings. Interestingly examining these there are a lot of beetle wing covers, along with fur and other bits. She disappears in the summer, presumably to mate, nest and bring up offspring. She's big enough to be able to take out wood pigeons but also robins and other garden birds, especially during what must be the rearing season of her chicks. What is particularly annoying is she has taken out several spotted woodpeckers. On writing to the RSPB suggesting that they are over protecting the raptors and citing this, they airily replied that there is no shortage of spotted woodpeckers and they are on the increase. We never seem to see her mate, the very much smaller male sparrow hawk but we do quite often see one or two of her juveniles in the autumn. The RSPB seem to have lost all touch with nature. Perhaps the biggest joke of all, some years ago they managed to acquire the whole of the Arne peninsular, which divides the upper and lower parts of Poole Harbour. Arne is home to a herd of sika deer and the RSPB refused to allow any culling by stalkers. The inevitable happened the herd got too large for the food supply. The deer became undernourished, to the point where you could see their ribs painfully sticking out, and then became prone to disease such as mange and ring worm and general malaise. The RSPB were taken to court by the RSPCA for mismanagement and maltreatment of animals in their care and lost the case and now have to allow culling. Another example is the old harbour at Pagham, near Bognor Regis. A storm damaged the harbour's natural protection and it was abandoned and became a wonderful wild fowling venue. The local wild fowling club employed a full time warden, who cleared excessive weed, kept the predators in order and the wild fowl flourished. This was too much for the RSPB, who managed to acquire the harbour with their considerable funds, so as to stop wild fowling. They employed a part time warden, who of course was not allowed to eliminate or control any predators, being part time he wasn't able to keep abreast of the weed growth, so it is now a rank and desolate spot, with neither a duck or goose able to nest and overrun with vermin. Perhaps we shouldn't entirely blame the RSPB. People were congratulating us today on the number of house martins and swifts circling round our house. We have two pairs of swifts that have nested here as long as we can remember and normally sixty martins' nests, which means by the end of the breeding season 360 martins. We gather that we have the swifts because we don't stuff up every hole in our eaves - as people are encouraged to do in the interests of energy conservation and are happy to put up with the inevitable mess that the martins make round the house
