hi all i put some mice poison down recently at the back of my loft which was put inside a plastic container about the size of a shoe box which was hidden under bricks when i checked it 2 days later i found that something had completely covered the poison inside the container with small bits of straw, twigs, and what looks like mud? :-/ so i then cleared the container out and put in fresh poison only to find that whatever it was had done exactly the same thing by the next morning? any ideas anybody as to what i might be dealing with and the best way to deal with it :-/ kev

kev01293 replied to Jillus's topic in Introductions & Member Messages
i agree with kirky and phil keep your birds locked in over the winter or the hawk will be back now he knows where to find a meal ive had problems with hawks myself and know how persistant they can be sorry to hear about your other birds but at the moment the best thing to do is keep them in kev -

hi i put some mice poison behind my loft in a little tin foil dish (like the takaway ones) and covered the dish up leaving just about about an inch gap at ground level for any vermin to get in i checked it yesterday and found that something had made what looks like a nest in the tin foil dish out of wood shavings/straw/small feathers so i cleaned the dish out and topped it up with fresh poison :-/ when i checked it again tonight it was full again of shavings/straw/feathers which were on top of the poison in the dish :-/ why would mice build a nest on top of poison after i had already destroyed one the day before? can anyone advise as im not too clued up on vermin and would appreciate any help kev

Sad news about my grandads old pigeons
kev01293 replied to globalgirl's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
well done 4 taking care of your grandads pigeons after he passed over as youve now found out it is only when u spend time with pigeons that you see their different characters and your grandads pigeons are lucky that they get to spend the rest of their days in his loft with u looking after them sorry to hear about chicken legs but at 19 ys hes done well im sure your grandad would appreciate all your help kevin -

josh could well be right about it being a stolen pigeon thats had its ring cut off if you dont end up tracing the owner then maybe a local animal sanctuary will take it off your hands and give it a home kev

well done for going to the trouble of looking after a lost pigeon when i first read the posting i thought that it was probably a young feral/street pigeon but after looking at the photo it looks as if its been bred and cared for by somebody as it doesnt have a identity ring its not possible to trace the owner but maybe someone in your area who keeps pigeons can ask about for you as it may belong to somebody local? it will probably be hungry and thirsty so any type of bird seed will do for now but make sure it has a dish of water to drink from at all times if you can get pigeon corn then all the better but if not then you can give it rice or lentils, barley, crushed peanuts (unsalted) or even bread crumbs kev

hats off to you vallance lofts and stoker for going to the trouble of checking the van and making sure that the birds were safe/comfortable before the courier left with them ive got to admit that ive handed birds over to couriers in the past without even thinking about the conditions they might have to put up with in transit but in future i will walk them to the couriers van myself just to check the conditions in the back of their van just in case kev

best dog for guarding my birds?
kev01293 replied to the wee red hens's topic in Lofts, Fixtures & Fittings
for me its gotta be a jack russel small so he can get into almost anywhere, chases anything that dares come near the loft and will sit in the garden for hours waiting for anything that may come back, as a guard dog i cant fault him kev -

i agree with what racer said sometimes a new post comes on and before long it gets hijacked for the amusement of a few people.. i like a laugh and a joke just like most people, but when someones put a post on looking for help surely thats what we should be doing .

looks like a hawk attack to me dogeon but well done for travelling that far to collect your bird its nice to see a fancier making the effort i reported a stray a couple of weeks back with a badly knocked wing and the owner only lived approx 15 miles away but by the way he was talking anyone would have thought he lived in another country

sounds very much like a loft we saw some 5 years back we were working on a customers house who also had pigeons but hadnt raced for some time due to his age his loft was absolutely filled to the rafters with pigeons ob,s and yb,s all in together, nests everywhere, and this was all happening while he was getting hawk strikes on a regular basis, the drinkers had a green coating on them and only got topped up by hose and all he did was feed them wheat, anyway he asked us if we could find a home for some of them due to his advancing years (which we did) but every time the rehomed pigeons were released from their new lofts all bar one or two headed straight back to him, his pigeons certainly didnt mind an overcrowded loft but that said its not something i would do i like my pigeons to have plenty of space but it certainly makes you think doesnt it ?

Pigeon in our garden - please advise
kev01293 replied to juliejay's topic in Introductions & Member Messages
hi julie thank you for looking after after a lost racing pigeon i also live in west sussex and would be happy to collect the pigeon if it doesnt leave your garden shed when you release it :-/ if it is a young pigeon it may decide to stay where the food/water is rather then try to fly home? i have sent you a private message with my contact tel no,s in case you need them? good luck kevin -
totally agree with what you did roland and would have done the same thing myself i report birds cos i hope that they would report mine i have to say that ive met some really nice people when reporting birds but sadly they are in the minority ps if i remember rightly a bird that entered somebodys loft as a stray later went on to win a national for the finder after it was transfered over to him i think his first name was les?

if we are prepared to spend money on training, racing, feeding, medication etc, then we should be prepared to spend £30 to send for them is it any wonder that us pigeon fanciers get a bad name when all the vast majority of fanciers want to do is make excuses why they cant send for them:( or dont even bother to reply to a reported bird > good manners cost nothing kevin
