My opinion is that they are not lazy. They are just not as healthy as the loftmates.

I agree there are many ways to tackle this problem and we must continue with all of them. BOP's will never be controlled until the song birds are almost extinct. When this happens the RSPB will act to save then which we all know means controlling BOP. As fanciers we can assist nature to reach this natural conclusion by denying BOP the food they require at key times of the year by altering our breeding and racing schedules. When denied the staple food of pigeon they will turn their attention on other sources of food till that source becomes endangered. This can be managed but must be co-ordinated at Union level for approximately 3 years till we start to see results. We will not have fewer races because of this but we will a shorter season with old and young bird races on the same day. There are many benefits to such a plan for example decreased training costs as old an young could be trained together. I won't add any further details at this point in time.

I had a similar experience today but had no cricket bat handy. The youngsters took fright and off they went. I am one short and it was not the bird which the hawk struck.

So do the Belgians only keep mongerels. The pure strain is all in the mind for commercial purposes.

The goldfish should have had a smile on it's face because that's what was happining. Randy male frogs will tackle anything.

I am not sure if there is a best time. I just had a sparrowhawk scatter mine. I think the best policy is to let them out when hungry and when the weather is overcast and possibly raining. They tend to laze about in the rain and this gives them the opportunity to feel at home without flying.

It seems to me you are doing or have done something very wrong when starting up. Is there anyone close to you who can give you advice and perhaps some healthy stock? Personally I would start again and that would include a new house for the birds as the one you have must be contaminated with all sorts of germs now.

I had a Excel spread sheet which did the job but I found it was a good deal of work making it work properly. Must look for it.

I hope I didn't slag the guy off. That was never my intention. I hope I posted facts. Incidentally if any fancier has a performance pigeon which he obtained from a club mate and sold immediately after that performance he could not have had many related pigeons left in the loft. He could not have had mother, father or brothers and sisters. Possibly about 6 children maximum and from these has produced a family which has lasted over 40 years. Even Janssen Brothers could not manage that feat and still produce quality

I think it was in 2008 he won the SNFC Y.B. National.

Frank----I don't think he will me any younger than 75 years of age but possibly 80. Interestingly there was an letter in this weekend's BHW about the pigeon owned by Alan Raeside which did 1000 miles on the 3rd day.

I would race the bird as long as he flies around home. He will moult the stump naturally before the important races

Ok I admit to stretching the truth slightly

Well done Clocky. I was jist a wean in short troosers and tackity bits then. Note----tackity bits were worn on the feet and not enclosed in a cup. A few years later I was loaned a pigeon which had done that trip for Bill Love of Lochwhinnoch. By then it was a Jaffa and never filled an egg. For interest how many days is race time and was Lionheart inside race time. I have met Henry Mair on 2 occasions and also for interest he did a weekly report for the BHW on the first few pigeons in Ayrshire Federation from each race. He used the pen name of Harry O.

Pigeon racing then was a bit different then from now. I think the distance covered was 1052 miles. A clubmate of his also had a Barcelona or Palamos pigeon called Conqueror. That fancier was Alan Raeside who did not seek the publicity Henry did. Personally I would not attempt to influence anyone's decision. As far as I am aware the information I have posted is factual. I think he sells as many as he breeds but none locally. I know he has also sold pigeons to Japan.

His last race was in 1968. His best club position was 3 rd Club from 120 miles. His pigeon Lionheart homed from Barcelona----it took a long time but I think it was about 10 days. It was the record holder into Scotland---probably because very few tried that distance. The bird was bought by Frank Hall on behalf of Jim Biss. Some of the Biss champions contained it's blood lines. I believe there is a member on here from the South of England who has won with Mair bloodlines. In proportion to the numbers sold over the years it's not an outstanding success rate.

agreed they do look good. Maybe they were bred for racing kits and it would not be too much bother to find the correct details so they will just take a hit on the price.

I had a mail last night telling me that the RSPCA had visited a fancier in Southern England telling him that he had too many birds. The Officer tried to tell him they should be cleaned and disinfected daily and asked how he disposed of his unwanted pigeons. The officer insisted on seeing the birds and was told to go away and come back with the Police. The fancier in question is on the RPRA council and told the officer this and that he would tell the queen that she was keeping her birds incorrectly according to the to the RSPCA. He suggested that she might see fit to withdraw the Royal status from the RSPCA. The officer had no idea that the queen had pigeons and has not been seen since. It is clear that these people meddle in areas where they are completely ignorant. We should always be prepared for these people should they appear on our doorstep.

Hmmm I missed whatever haqppened earlier but just reading this thread and knowing a little about the personalities on here I think I know the person under discussion. Yes a pretty despicable character.

I tried to save a few shillings and asked Bamfords if they would deliver to my home with me paying delivery charge. They said they only sold through Grain Merchants. I am not sure the reason for the Versa Laga price increase but the excuse will probably be the weak pound.

Just had a look. A very progressive and well organised Federation.

They may well be a complete nuiscance to the guy he had them from. Personally I would never have given that number of adult pigeons to a new starter because I would be letting myself in for hassle.
-
My reading of the initial post suggests they are all hens. I think they will be difficult to break. I would concentrate on the youngsters personally.

What do you understand by the words Form Spot and would you pool a pigeon because it showed this?
