How much should I feed my birds
jimmy white replied to Iqbal's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
hopper fed birds eat what they need and no more,, pigeons rationed will gorge themselves when ever they get the chance, but hopper fed birds must be tamed from the youngster stage , called in with a tit bit -
better left with parents untill ready for weaning ,, its the easiest thing in the world to tame ybs ,and can actualy be good fun and,,,they remember this the rest of their lives, they often make better birds as they go thrugh less stress than wild pigeons
-
depends on the system , the races and the birds, for distance races natural the end of march which will mean you will be sending birds that have just cast their first flight, birds on w,hood will hold there flights ok , but tend to have too many races b4 distance race ,, but for sprint races w,hood,up to 350 mies feb in my opinion is early enough.

i had stated this in past posts :) but this is true , preferably the spit of a child , as this is purer than an adults :) thank goodness you mentioned this pigeon scout as i had some queer answers b4 ;D
-
spot on rose ,,in other words know your birds
-
i must say i a gree with this entirely, , it may have looked like i was knocking you, i wasnt, [merely a mix up on the last sentance] i dont really think that one man could possibly give justice to over 100 ybs ,in fact not fair on the ybs,my freind raced 18 yb s from the start last year finnished up with 13 and had a fantastic season ,,,,,,racing against the folk with 100 plus ybs , i think that says it all
-
my first race was in millerhill club in 1954, there were 48 members , i was 13th, never forget it , was a d cheq hen the tamest bird i had :) then i got worse ;D
-
when i used to keep them in the "yard" this was a yard they did car repairs , scrap cars, greyhounds the lot ;D ;D ;D the birds used to collect the bits of WELDING RODS for nesting material AFTER me putting tobaco stalks down ;D ;D ;D

thats what we need , the more good publicity the better, showing pigeons in a better light what we dont need is bickering , from the outside looking in as it were, i can see myslf that fanciers are shooting themselves in the foot with petty arguements , they are to be enjoyed,,,not endured
-
also wish you good luck ,jason
-
yes,, have kept birds all my life , will continue to do so
-
tony i must apologise i read your post wrongly,,, i thought you meant the paramyxo came back ,,,it was just the symtoms that came back going through the stress of driving,,got you now :)not the actual desease. it could be as you say the after effects of the desease made worse by stress.,, as for the salmonella, i have to say i have seen birds proove positive for this looking absolutely normal , these are the carriers , as you say sometimes they can be left with wing damage noticable in flight,ie flying lop sided or limping or swollen joints on the legs, but there are cases with birds had salmonella and show no symtoms, these, in my opinion are the danger ones , but i get your drift now , i misread that slightly :) just send me up the chop suey ;D ;D ;D you can get them delivered for £1 50 mr wong would get a fright if you ordered one for my address ;) ;D

not at all birdman ,, but some are so rediculous that this was the reason for the very first post ,,,about the way we think or the way we take the wrong idea out a theorie, this was the jist of the posting , there are theories and theories, i certainly dont mean all theories are baloney , its sometimes what we take out the theorie, that is baloney, as you will have noticed from the first post :)in 55 years in pigeon racing, beleive me, ive heard some theories, some are good , but some would simply make you laugh [would you put water in your black minerals,c,mon you have to smile :) ]

yes all lovely birds ben,, your doing a great job :)
-
i would agree with that as you have to live next door , being enemies could do more damage,,i know its easier said than done ,but worth a try ,,,,,,,then ;D ;D ;D

noticed the first lib on you tube, lib off the boat,,birds went straight up,, other clip birds flew over fields then went up.never seen any drop in water on the big lib, a really lot of birds,, have witnessed more dead and injured birds on ordinary libs , mind you never seen any convoyer bring any back?? i beleive scotland could have there nat races from sweden, over the north sea over 400 miles of water but with a couple of 150 200 miles libs like that, from sweden to aberdeen would be the same distance as eyemouth, it would be direct east of edinburgh where glasgow would get their full overfly , im sure this could be done,, but it would take some pigeons :-/ [no perigrines]
