  6. good luck to all who have entered ,, a difficult race with the wind ,,,lets just hope for a good race and good returns
  7. put in a nut shell [or oyster shell ;D] theres one simple way to find out ,is dont give them grit whilst breeding and youll see the outcome yourself ???
  8. ah great to see you on the forum ;D thats speck,,down ,but not out ;D ;D ;D,,lets hope your out of pain asap
  9. i think its up to the fancier to find out what suits him best [time wise ,workwise, trainingwise etc] w, hood cocks are easier to manage and take less training , let out 1 hour am and 1 hour pm , whereas natural birds some are sitting and even feeding young [which takes a lot out of them] after w,hood cocks have been celibate [like me ;D] for a while ,their natural instinct is to range[i dont,,,,,now ;D] and have more action in them therefore keeping fitter is easier ,whereas natural birds take a lot more work ,but getting a natural system right ,they can certainly win races ,nowadays their getting w,hood cocks out of 5 600 miles [if done right]obviosly you wouldnt expect a bird to fly all the races and still win at that distance [again its fuel in the tank], but when you get the real gruelers out of the distance a natural bird set up for the job will take some beating my opinion would be that widowerhood is best up to 350 miles then a natural bird set up for the distance , but as with pigeons theres allways exception to the rule ,some cocks will just not fly good on w hood but fly good natural and vica versa, and off course excactly the same as hens , my advise would be to go to a top w hood flier in your area and watch look and listen and the same goes for natural
  10. good idea sammy ;D ;D ;D i think asda will have run out of them , with the weather were having here ;D ;D ;D
  11. i think plastic nest boxes would tend to "sweat"
  12. b4 breeding , make sure their not carrying eccess fat b4 pairing [laying] a higher carbo diet at this time, whilst feeding, a higher protein diet with plenty grit, minerals , pickstones etc, and a tablespoon or two of baby,s powdered milk in their water [never done that this year due to family illness, time wise etc, they had to take a back seat this year], when racingob,s would feed a high carbo diet for sprinters a higher protein diet for distance,, if i was keen to win with yb,s would feed a handfull or two of depurative ,yeast and lemon in the morning and a w. hood mix of an evening , but yb,s destined for the distance in the future ,a higher protein diet,, maybe a wee tip for those who use a sputnick , some times the yb,s are nervy the first race or so ,would put a perspex sheet on the base of the sputnick with a handfull of seed underneath it ,and a hungry old hen in the loft when the yb,s are due ,itll pick at this for ages and aid in getting the yb in ;D
  13. when you say" training" i consider this differant from tossing ,or tossing is a part of their training , first of all at a very young age i would get them tame and then basket train them [i found that tamer yb,s are easier basket trained ,less stress etc] but fed and watered in basket many times , when they are ranging , i would let them do so, till about 3 weeks b4 racing starts , then start tossing them ,probably about 5 miles to begin with a few times fairly peckish ,then 10 ,20 a few times at the 20 mark ,then single them up [this takes the whole day do do it right ] but after a couple of single ups they clear far quicker and then becomes easier [you cant do that with 100 ybs ;D] so the less yb,s the more attention, and less losses. i would then stretch them to 50 miles and give them this every day for a week [weather permitting], then theyd be ready for the first race , where i would probably train them 3 times a week 25 miles or so and try and get some single or double ups

like wiley im a great beleiver in brewers yeast , but some times i prefer the ordinary brewers yeast tablets [ very cheap out the chemist ] when all the birds have been done , i like going in quietly and examining every bird ,handling ,playing with them ,gaining their confidence, then popping a brewers yeast tablet down there throats [also myself ;D ;D ;D and look at me ;D ;D ;D] i also like a handfull of hormoform [for the birds , not me ;D],,,but to be honest ,i think a lot of the products nowadays are a waste of money
  15. they same veiw looking out my window now ,,,,,,,,,,,,,bucketing
  16. i think there are some feds now that have made it a rule that if the weather is not suitable ,they can send the next day ,or even the next again, which does make sense, but the nat ruling says they must go on the date given? [even if it costs a fortune to hold them up to ,is it 6 days ?]
  17. this weather is diabolical up here for the middle -end of june , lets hope it improves ,,, good luck to all at maidstone wheather it be nat, or fed
  18. east side racing,, west side racing , the hawks are certainly plentyfull ,,,, round about from longtown to preston its loaded these race points are only 40 ,,50 miles from the east side race points [which there are also plenty hawks[ but a perigrine would travel this ,very very easy ,especialy for a picnic :-/ quite simply, their all over ,, and as the fifer says ,if theres a nice quiet power station or cathedral etc ,the rspb ,no matter where,,,,,the rspb would make sure it was ,nest boxed and a pair of perigrines to occupy it.

  24. pigeons need grit,,, they have a crop [which holds their food] and a gizzard where the grit masticates the food , but there are all sorts of grits.
