if you remove it, it might be worth replacing it with a pot egg to stop the hen sitting too tight and the chick developing splayed legs. Lee

Does anyone keep two or more families that do best at different distances? Im looking to start racing next year primarily towards the longer distance, which I think will involve sending the birds to the shorter races at the start of the season to get them used to the basket and to train them up. I have recently seen some birds that I like but which are better at sprint/middle distance. I was wondering what people thought of keeping birds this way? At least whilst the longer distance birds are training but are unlikely to win the shorter races, I would have some interest from the shorter distance birds - wouldn't I? Im only looking to start with a dozen stock for the longer distance and half a dozen for the middle distance. Anyone think I'm trying to run before I can walk??? any opinions welcome, just remember I'm a newbie and have no experience of racing yet!!! Lee

Roland I agree to a certain extent mate, but I was just commenting on what might stop new members posting or discourage them from joining in - didnt mean the banter was a bad thing

Preston is good mate thanks. Still at Penwortham but hoping to move over towards Burnley way very soon. Tried moving to Todmorden but the purchase fell through - we couldnt take the pigeons - b*st*rds!!! It's a nightmare trying to find a house that accommodates the animals and is convenient for all concerned, and affordable! Hows life mate?

i could'nt agree more, when i first joined like you i noticed the same things and the same if you dont do it my way your an idiot posts. so i spent ages going thru old posts looking for info. It would be nice if you could link up with someone from your area who flys natural or that use to fly natural, i dont know who we have on here that is from your neck of the woods. but my opinion is go back and look thru the old threads theres a search button at the top left, and failing that you will soon learn whos posts to read and who to take no notice of . Anyway all the best ....................amanda thanks for that

agreed. but who decides on who should go??? and how do you decide who is not worth keeping??? at the moment one name springs to mind - who only ever disrupts threads and winds people up. others have already gone. maybe the only way to deal with them is to not respond to any of their posts, too many people are too quick to take the bait, and that keeps the idiots coming back.

just as an example further to my above post, a recent post about natural racing was started by someone recently and i found it very interesting, because this is how i intend to base my racing on, well, sort of. Another member posted his view about the method involving quite strict culling. Now that wouldnt be my choice of how to do it, but he was entitled to his opinion. the problem started as i see it though because he was of the opinion that you would fail if you did it any other way. so then everyone else jumped in and said he was wrong, some of them showing their outrage at his views. so then their attitude was the 'right' one, and you shouldn't cull. whichever way you look at it, as a newbie I would not have jumped into that battlefield because alot of the posts were saying people aren't entitled to their opinions. It was a very helpful post for new starters like me, if only to come away knowing that some other people do things the way i intend to, but that some dont! in my opinion, no-one's way is THE way to do it, otherwise everyone would do it the same way... sorry if im rambling!

Hey guys. there are a couple of reasons why I dont post many replies, maybe others don't because of the same reasons. Im a newbie and haven't started racing yet, although i have the birds for it. I read alot of posts to help me in getting started, to get as much info as possible for the time when I will be racing. As a result, I read alot of them but dont post as i have no knowledge to share!!!! another reason is that there are a few members whose attitudes to some posts are unhelpful at times, and sometimes just over-the-top or my-way-is-the-only-way. For anyone new who needs advice, any posts like this are the ultimate type of discouragement and prevent further posting. Just my opinion Lee

Due to buying some coloured stock and wanting to reduce my numbers down to half a dozen whites and half a dozen coloureds I am selling 6 white birds. All are 2008 birds. 4 are Logans, 2 are Logan x Busshaerts and are very late breds. All are pure white and ready to go. They haven't been raced and don't have pedigrees, but are from the birds that I intend breeding my first white racers from. £10 each as I urgently need the room the usual donation to PB will follow. I have kept whites for a couple of years now and want to put them to the test next year. Ive never raced before and am due to move house soon. So I have something to compare them to I have just bought half a dozen long distance birds - dark cheqs mainly - to train and race alongside. All will be treated exactly the same. If I only end up with dark cheqs at the end of three years I'll know this could be true. I'll try to keep people posted as this is a topic that crops up every now and again. Lee

once read an article about someone who reared a woody from an egg either under some rollers or nuns. only reared ne because of the size difference and i think when it flew out it flew somewhere in the middle, the nuns scimming the rooftops and the rollers flying higher. was that you??? Lee

Can I have a cock paired to 2 hens?
Leroy replied to pigeonman007's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
for the first time ever i have just had this happen with my 3 white stock birds, one pair and a spare hen. all 3 were looking very settled and each hen selected their own corner so i put 2 nest bowls in. both hens laid at roughly the same time, but the hen of the pair wasnt getting as much attention and stopped sitting after about 14 days. the cock didnt do his fair share of sitting so presumably that was why the hen gave up. the others have reared two young. -
thanks stuart
