Mr Quinny has his own thoughts on pigeons and percentages, not to be influenced by guessers or pessimists!! :P

ditto, not ideal at times

Gareth Rankin is the man you want to speak to for distance birds, you can be sure of good birds, that are from distance stock, and a square deal to boot. Now would be a good time to speak to him as his team are getting ready for the Nationals

I would suggest you approach a good fancier who lives near you and buy as many late breds as he will sell you, or as many as you can afford, Pair up around last week FEB or first in March, to give the hens as much time to mature as possible before asking them to lay eggs. For the first year i would race Natural, its less complicated and you'll get a look at which birds respond to the various stages of the nest cicle, that could give you a pointer to how you would like to race them in the coming years. Just bear in mind you are about to start a LONG TERM project, so be patient, enjoy your birds, and find the system that suits you and your doos. All the very best to you.

Thanks Ian, that''ll give me 8 opportunities to have a wee side bet way Budgie

Cheers if i don't get anything definite, i'll try them. Got their number at the loft

I would strip the old loft out when i moved the birds to the new loft, when they see the shed bare, no food no water not even a perch to siy on, nothing for them, they'll get the message its not home any more. First time you let them out they'll probably go straight back because its so near, but when they realise the situation they'll break easily. Hunger makes good kitchen, and it breaks doos, so keep them keen when you try them out, just don't expect Not to carry them a few times because you will, but then knock the old shed down. London to an Orange they'll break next day!

I was wondering if the lots will be drawn just now, which would presumably mean they would have training and prep races to overcome in the lead up to the final race, or will the 40 lots be drawn using birds as they are being basketed for the race on 4th of September??

The best pigeon i've had in the last 10 years was a latebred. He went to Maidstone 361mls, still carrying 4 nest flights! He won £388 that day and went on to score another 3 times from Maidstone as well as Lille, where he won a Photo of himself, and Falaise. Lot to be said for latebreds in my hut. Should also point out that they get treated exactly the same as the rest of my yearlings, except USUALLY i stop them at the 250ish mark, where the others will carry on to the coast and occasionally over the water.

Ye might have time to set her up for Clermont Alan, its possible i reckon

Nobody out there got a contact number for this doo?

I race mine to the yearling Derby in the Fed, 250mls, as a rule anyway, I got 3 out of Sunday's difficult race, 267mls this year, all on Sunday. I breed a dozen or so every year, always have done, This year i started with 11, lost 4 right away training, which is pretty normal to be honest, of the 7 who made the first race i have 5 in the loft, 2 of which missed Sunday's race. One is getting a reprieve as its paired to a 2yr old hen thats going to Ypres, but it had 5 races to 225mls, the other will go this week , 313mls, from the 3 i got on Sunday and the hen going this week i'm confident that with a full moult and some luck in racing i'll have 1 or 2 good pigeons next year. Thats a better average than Budgie's 2% rule ;) A bit hasty there :D

Truth be told it was never in my mind to forget it! I knew when the season kicked off i'd need to choose races to compete in come this time because its a young team i'm racing. Bourges & Alencon were first to go, simply because i think i've a better chance of winning some prizes from my chosen races, have to cut your cloth at times mate.
-
Have to say my tolerance levels for anything that wishes to disturb ma does is minimal!! I relocate everything, and i mean everything, 4 legged, furry, flying or scurrying, no time wasting or second thoughts they gotta go
-
I'm racing 95% yearlings Bigda, canny compete in all the races so it'll need to be in 2 or 3 years time i WIN the Gold Cup!
-
If you tell me where to send mine i'll get it off to you before the weeks out? (knowing me i'll be the only one on basics who doesn't already know where to send it )
-
Well i'm sending every fit bird in the loft to it, 9 to 12 birds, especially if its a wsw wind. I'll probably miss the comeback race next week, but out of the doos from Saturday and this week i'll select my Eastbourne and Ypres candidates. The ones that miss those will go to the final SNFC race, that'll finish my old bird season off i'd reckon.

DkCh Pd SU 10 CA 390. That young bird came in tonight, any takers??

Personally i would give the council a body swerve, all you'll get is some eejit trying to justify there job. First thing they'll do is demand plans of your proposed build, then you'll have to get the neighbours to sign Their sheet, then they'll hit you with a planning application form to fill in and submit to the planning department, take god knows how long to decide your future in the sport and Charge you for the privilege!! Go ahead and build your loft quietly and say nothing to anyone about it. Let them worry about stopping you when your up and running. I'm sure that because it would cause suffering to the doos if you take the loft away, they'd consider it no worth the hassle. Also as a paid up member of the SHU you can get them to back you up in any disputes with the council. Get the dookit up asap and enjoy your birds.

Just wondering where you got the Crystal ball Bigda, i mean its Monday night and your predicting a disaster on Saturday! That guy Fish would have trouble doing that... There will be the same chance of a good/poor race this weekend as any other weekend
