  4. hi all well thanks again for all the replies as i said b4 all of the new birds are being kept seperate and treated for worms, canker and cocci and then i will send some samples off to be tested the reason i bought the new birds in was to breed from them as most of mine are an assortment of strays gathered over the last couple of years that the owners didnt want back the fancier who gave me the birds raced them quite successfully but the paperwork i have been given only refers to 1946,47,and 48 when the fancier won diplomas and won the federation once the card states that the vel was 779yds per minute if anyone can tel me what that means? i also have a yellow certificates of origin dated 1997 stating that van hees were purchased from louella and also some white louella busschaert forms refering to pigeons called alamas and almeda that were gb 93 and 94 birds are these long or short distance pigeons? debbie
  5. thanks everyone for all the replies when i took the birds out of the baskets they looked fine but with some lice and mites which i treated straightaway with ivermectin the birds i was given were some of the remaining ones as the hawks had taken quite a few as they were on open hole they are now being treated for canker, cocci and worms but before they go in with my own birds i want to be sure they are ok healthwise will the usual droppings/swab test pick up up things like salmonella and paratyphoid? or is there another way of testing for all diseases ? sorry for all the questions but i dont want to put my other birds at risk! debbie
  6. it must be a tippler that i got in as a stray a while back its a little grizzle with ntu written on the ring but the owner wouldnt send for it and 9 times out of 10 its the last one flying when my birds are out excercising there was a couple of times when it had some of my yb,s flying out untill it got dark and they ended up on the house roof all night debbie
  7. i was given some pairs of old birds that belonged to a fancier who passed away after a long ilness when the birds arrived they seemed to be in good condition apart from a few lice and mites but when i recently went to his loft to collect some box perches i noticed rat holes in the loft floor and his wife told me that they had been having a vermin problem for the last couple of years since the fancier had become ill i also noticed some wheat on the loft floor so im assuming that the birds have eaten feed that has been contaminated by the rats or mice im sure that i read somewhere that mice can cause disease if they get into the corn but i dont remember what disease or how to treat it? it would be great if anyone could advise me thanks debbie :-/
  8. welcome to basics its how i got started after a stray arrived in my garden and how i got all the info i needed deb

    Hawk detterent?

hopefully this new idea with the red dye may help :-/ ive tried all the usual things like hanging cd,s, plastic owls, and playing the eagle owl tape b4 letting my birds out the eagle owl cd seems to work for me as whenever i play it i never have any hawk attacks that day but i havnt played it for a while as the attacks died down only for me to look out of my kitchen window last week and see a sparrowhawk sitting on my garden fence looking in at my birds that were luckily locked in the loft > my next door neighbour has a bird table that is only about 2 ft away from my loft on the other side of our dividing fence and she constantly keeps it topped up with bird food so the hawk probably thought all his xmas,s had come at once by the time i had got out to the garden the hawk had dissapeared but going by the noises all the sparrows, blackbirds etc were making he obviously hadnt gone far sparrowhawks sightings have become far more common in my area (crawley, sussex) over the last year or so with them now taking street pigeons in front of shoppers in our town centre, needless to say my birds havnt been out for excercise for a while but when they do i will be playing my eagle cd at full blast for at least an hour b4 they are allowed out of the loft debbie

  18. well done ronnie for giving her another chance who knows what she has had to do to survive and to get home but get home she did shes probably learnt a few things while she was missing but her love of home was strong enough that she kept on going until she got there as chriss said: if only pigeons could talk i bet your face was a picture when you saw that she had returned home debbie

  24. can anyone tell me if lice/mites can be treated via the drinking water ? ive tried spraying them with the usual spray treatments and when after a week or so i noticed that some were still on the pigeons i tried a one drop treatment on the back of their necks but this hasnt worked either ? surely there has to be an easier way to treat for lice/mites then treating them all individually? as im a novice any advice would be appreciated debbie
