hi all,i rescued one of my pigeons today from a cat and apart from some punture marks around the keel bone my pigeon seems ok physically but she is refusing to eat and was just laying on the loft floor refusing to move? i bathed the puncture marks with tcp and have locked her into a nestboxbox on her own with food/water as other birds were pestering her have i done the right thing locking her away? debbie ps im hoping that she is just in shock and will be ok tomorow :-/

thanks for all your replies/advice guys i will try the chlorocarb first but if that doesnt work i will go with the frontline, sheep drench, benzyl benzoate, one spot, parrafin etc ;D your all stars debbie

i was having problems clearing my birds of lice/quill mites and was told that the best way to treat them was via the drinkers using moxidectin,i used a horse wormer containing moxidectin which did the trick but now some of my birds have developed bald patches on their crops and one has a bald patch on the back of his neck? can anyone tell me what is causing the bald patches and what to treat it with? any help would be appreciated debbie :-/ ps although they have bald patches some still have about half inch of quill left untouched?

yeh the eggs were about the same size as the small egg shown in redcheqhens pic one of the hens is a yearling and the other a 2 yr old and all my birds have access to grit, minerals, and pickstones 24/7 so i cant see it being down to lack of calcium one hen is sitting really tight on the small egg but i dont know what to do-leave it under her or replace it with a dummy egg? maybe she knows something i dont? should i leave the egg and just see what happens? debbie :-/

hi all, ive got 2 different hens that have each laid very small eggs ( about grape size) has anybody ever had this in their loft and if yes can anyone tell me why they think this happens? both of these hens have laid normal size eggs before so i cant understand it 1 hen had already laid a normal sized 1st egg followed by the 2nd small egg and the other hen has only laid the 1st small egg so im waiting to see if and what the 2nd egg is like? any theories anyone ? all my birds have access to grit, black minerals and pickstones so i cant understand this :-/ debbie

thanks for the replies some interesting stuff there the tippler ive got came in as a stray last year and has been here ever since but its now paired up to one of my racers the tippler ive got obviously has homing instinct to some degree as like i said it is usually the last one home near darkness and always finds her way back after being out of sight for hours, its just a pity that she cant find her way back to hartcliff in bristol where she came from i spoke to the owner but he wont send for her and im not sure if the tippler union members have to send for their strays like we do :-/? debbie
-
this probably sounds like a silly question but can anyone tell me if tippler pigeons posses a homing instinct like racers? its just that the one i have flys for hours when out and only comes in when its nearly dark i didnt know wether it would be ok to take it training with my racers? as i said probably a silly question but thought id ask it anyway(as us woman do ;D) debbie

very nice pigeons chickadee i must admit that ive got a soft spot for fantails myself but i dont think they would last long where i live with the hawks im happy enough with my racers which i got started with when a stray decided to move into my garden shed a couple of years ago and never went back to his old owner (who didnt want him anyway) so i kept him, got him a hen bird and before i knew it i had a loft full of gifted racing pigeons and some more stray racers ive still got a stray tippler here from last year but her owner wouldnt send for her so thats another addidtion to my loft take care debbie
-
its a cock bird chickadee and a racer from the logan strain, bit of a stroppy/bossy thing as well who likes to think hes the daddy of the loft i cant see anyone mistaking him for a hen with his big wattles and bold head the only strange thing that i forgot to mention was that he stunk to high heavens when he got home the same sort of smell you get when you pass a sewage treatment works god only knows what he got up to and where he went on his travels? if only pigeons could talk debbie :-/ ps by the way loved the pic of the fantail is it yours chickadee?

no they are not my hands they belong to my builder boyfriend i knew that i would get a smart remark as soon as i looked at the photo :) ;D ;D had to get my boyfriend to hold wally so i could take pic apart from his tail he hasnt had any other feathers cut ?? when i found him at first light he was so thirsty that he was drinking bleached water out of a bucket at the back door i gave him some corn and water with a probiotic to try counteract the bleach in the water but all he was interested in was getting back in with his hen bird so i left them to it surely a fancier would realise that cutting his tail feathers wouldnt stop him flying :-/ or was it somebodys strange way of telling me that he had been elsewhere :-/ he has still got his tel no ring on so they could have just phoned me i spose its just not knowing why that winds me up > anyway thanks for the replies and anymore theories would be welcome im off to the shop now to get some handcream ;D take care debbie

ive sent u a pm richard debbie
-
thanks for that bob but leatherhead is nearer to me than eastbourne but going by the weather we are having here tonite i wouldnt be suprised if they dont lib tomorow debbie :-/
-
well done richard for taking care of a lost racing pigeon have u got something to feed it such as barley, rice, wild bird or budgie seed etc it would also need a small pot/bowl of water but maybe u have already done this ? pigeons become very dehydrated if they cant find water when they are trying to find their way home so access to water asap can be vital please send me a pm if u need any further advice and thanks for making the effort to relocate a lost racing pigeon with its owner debbie
