Thanks for advice mate i have reared young before but was only 14 years old at the time i kept and raced pigeons for about two years with my grandad but what basic knowledge i learnt then most of it i have forgot lol but i still have a rough idea. Can i ask what the difference is in a novice rearing young in winter compared to spring ? Apart from obvioulsy the weather.

January will see them on the wing in February. ....weeks and weeks before you are due to race....this may give you problems with losses around the loft when they are ranging etc and if you have a small team it can be a bit demolarising. Also the feeding bill will be higher and as you pointed out the weather is sh**.....its not a rule so you can do what you want but it's not really about winning in your start year more about learning and keeping hold of they ybs....Would you be better getting some yearling stock and breeding your own?

Cheers mate what you have said is worth taking into account and yes i imagine getting some stock i would be a touch cheaper but i dont think im going to have the space for stock birds just yet i have give it some thought over the last week or two though.

The only reason i want to start getting my young bird team together in january is because i plan on getting the loft up asap before christmas shopping starts lol and dont think i will be able to see it sitting empty until spring as its only september and im keen to get started already haha but your right in what you said next year will just be about getting a team of young birds together and getting them through ready to race the OB card in 2018
