Craig Forsyth Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 Paired up all my birds last night racers and stock went out to give them a feed tonight letting boxes out separately to find out one of my cocks have battered it's hen wound the box now her heads all bloody and got a swollen eye😢
billt Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 If you shut them in boxes always put something in for the hens to get up out of the way, upturned bowl or a block, brick etc.
Wiley Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 It can happen frustrating but it does....for years now ive always kept the bowls upside down, or put a house brick or block of wood in the box, so the hen can get somewhere high out of the cocks way from being hurt. The bowls only get turnt over when im 100% certain they have taken to each other
Bryngwynt Lofts Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 I usually find it is usually yearling cocks, who given the chance scalp there hens.I seperate during the evening to give her a break.Let him coo at her through the wires.Find this usually calms things as well.Always put a half brick or block of wood available for the hen to get away.
eastcoaster Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 If you have widowhood boxes , I bought more fronts and fix 1on each box so making 2 boxes cock in one side hen in other , they can't get to each other until you see a bit of affection from them then take spare front off and let them together. This way you will see any that don't take to each other without injury.
gulkie Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 If u have widowhood boxes the way I do it ,is to shut the hen in one side of the box Where the cock can't get to her .i do not let the cock in beside her until he is showing Up to her through the bars ,then and only then is he let in beside her .
walterboswell59 Posted January 23, 2016 Report Posted January 23, 2016 a gali pot turned upside down in the corner of the box sorts this out
