good education for y/bs andy

George canny agree with you on this one. Before this season Lanarkshires LAST 9/10 RACES were no further than 100 miles. It doesn't weed out enough of the rubbish and you breed off them as yearlings and you get the same time and time again. Although I do agree that all of the lost birds at the weekend are not rubbish, but I'll bet they're not all in good race condition.

andy i think most fanciers can weed out the crap themselves come the end of the season

andy do you think it will make them better by pushing them to 200 + miles if there any good kelso will do them

Better idea. Try racing your youngsters from 60 miles in May on a Sunday when the weather is fresher and the skies clear than the hottest months of July and August. The continentals have been doing this for years. I'm  sure by July the experience will tell and 200 miles may be possible.

You may well be correct Andy, one of the things that definitely doesn't help the young birds in Lanarkshire is we fly on a different line of flight every week and this is one of the reason why Pentland have such good racing at 100+ miles as when the young pigeons get into trouble they have the line of flight of experience from previous weeks,

Wish we could all fly to the Edinburgh area ;) ;) ;).

I think a lot of fanciers will not see the programme out for young birds if they are getting racing like this when they cross the 100mile mark.   Possible racing every week from the same distance this is what they do in other parts of the world .(education/confidence), most federation members dont go to the nationals, we are talking about the bread and butter federation fanciers who wish to have some birds for the following season and if the federation  have  no yearlings  then they run at a loss. Why not shorten the distance of the young bird national to 180 miles? and this could be everyones distance race.

Gareth,

Agree with you partially but Lanarkshire fed is only 20 miles west of me. Our line of flight is one of 2xvalleys, the A7 Gala Water or the A68 East side of Soutra. Earlier postings from Cheeseman and Eggy are lots of losses too. These guys are on both the Lines of Flight for Edinburgh. We do have losses to you know, but what I,m saying is if you do what you've always done, you'll get what you always got. We all need to restructure. Anyway you couldnae come to Edinburgh, you wouldnae fit under the Harthill Bridge ;D ;D

180 miles to where? it`ll be a training toss for solway. dont know what caused saturdays disaster but dont think it was clashing. who did they clash with and what would turn a convoy of 5000.

Over 100 miles for solway, the nfc race shorter distances for their first races,  the mind set that  YB nationals have to be from a certain distance should be in the past, THIS IS HOW THE SPORT HAS NOT MOVED FORWARD AND WILL DIE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DECADES IF WE DONT CHANGE .

Got to agree with Gareth regards line of flight 3 Cockenzies and then St.Boswells :-/

2 of the worse places to liberate doos. Every Pylon in East Lothian runs into Cockenzie power station on your line of flight and St Boswells is the Bermuda Triangle.

i think you should stop trying to put this on the few members as it takes more than a few to win the vote to go to this race and distance

i did not want to go to hexham or 2 kelso but that what was voted for and thats where we went and you will not get 100miles next year as there are to many that keep the doo's as pets and try to races them when the birds are falling to bits jmo

Move the last 2 young bird races to a day other than a Saturday and give the fanciers that want to test their young birds a chance.

Theres 2 fed transporters why not make use of them with:-

One for the fanciers that want to have a bulging loft full of young birds that have flown 60-90 miles.

One for the fanciers who want to test the quality of young bird that is housed over the winter.

Do realise at this minute in time that it is a very sensitive subject for all of us but members cant cower away from having races over 100 miles, more work has to go into our young bird program and one of the problems is having a jump of more than 70 miles which is no good for the young doos and fanciers alike.
