What is the importance of hemp seed for those distance minded and how do you use it? It's a grain I use a lot for my sprinting, but wondered what use it would have for the distance

I use it in recovery mostly but also in a trappng/titbit mix. Lots will use it a few days before basketing as a fats producer i guess. Feed lots during the moult mixed with linseed and rice

I use it for early races but don't see how will help for distance I fact it might cause problems getting the birds all het up when they realy need to chill and rest the high energy in it would be gone by the second day but maybe I've got it wrong

Reason why I asked was reading a German excellent long distance fancier and he felt it was essential 4 days before basketing would be to have 50% hemp in the composition of his grain. But no reason to suggest why he felt it was important

I know of a fancier at present who is successfully timing birds at 750 mls

Last 2 days bowl of hemp available in its box tops up as required

I read that the Nutritional value of Hemp seed is ZERO!!! I don't think it was in a pigeon mag though. But its in most small seed mixes and mine get theirs through that, but having read that article i wouldn't include it in my feeding program independent of other feeds.

Hemp is a high protein seed containing all nine of the essential amino acids (like flax). It also has high amounts of fatty acids and fiber as well as containing vitamin E and trace minerals. It has a balanced ratio of omega 3 to 6 fats at around a three to one ratio

Copied article by the way no that clever

Perhaps the fancier just feels comfortable feeding hemp. Peanuts and sunflower hearts are the other two high fat seeds/pulses/grains but he might be worried peanuts my hold mould & they don't eat sunflower hearts as readily as the do hemp.

I believe the main benefit of feeding hemp lies in the fact that it has a higher content of omega 3 fatty acids than any other seed/grain.

I also believe that after the bird burns it's store of carbohydrates it then relies on stored fatty acids for fuel. It needs about 3 grams per hours of these for flight. I also believe that it uses omega 3 before omega 6 before omega 9.

The above is also the reason why we should be feeding high fat mixes in the transporter to ensure the birds have fuel for their flight home.

44% of the seed is oils of which A very very high % is essential fatty acids hence the use of it late on in the week towards basketing

Mind you it is cannabis!

So I'm thinking are they energized or just very happy :emoticon-0136-giggle: :emoticon-0136-giggle:

I read that once Sunflower Seeds are de-hulled they start losing their value rapidly. If this is the case, and given the fear over peanuts, then hemp would be an ideal substitute. Also as a rider I also read from the same source that un-hulled Sunflower seeds are fairly useless as the digestive system is unable to break down the hull. Tried feeding them and never noticed pure seeds coming through and the article was very dated, so perhaps modern dieticians have found it to be incorrect. I believe parrots de-hull them before eating them, but pigeons are unable so to do. :)
