captain Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Any advice on settling young birds strong on the wing.
Guest Owen Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 I usually have that job every year so I am well used to it.Keep them short of food and get them running to you when you call them. Open the door of the loft and let them walk out and position yourself so they can't fly passed you. Toss them small amounts of corn and gradually work them out of the loft for about 6' or so. Pause with the feeding so that they will look up and then feed them back inside. Do this every day for several days until they are quite a distance from the loft and when you think they are ready just back away and let them walk around the ground outside the loft and then throw food into the loft so that they will fly in after it. By that stage you should have cracked it.What ever you do try to keep the birds from taking off until they are used to walking in and out. I friend had this problem and just opened the loft a walked off. The birds came out, got scared and took off. He lost quite a few and the ones he got back took days to come back and most of them were ruined because they had been starving and dehydrated. Some of them were injured by a hawk and were never the same again.
tommy bhoys Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Any advice on settling young birds strong on the wing.best advice i could give is fairy liquid on one wing for about five days letting them sit out on board works for me
PIGEONPACKMAN Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 Do it latd in the day wing soaped also get some bird out whose are more experianced if you have any birds keen on the nest as these wont venture far and keep the younguns close to hommif they do take off.
jakie Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 position yourself so they cant fly past you ? start throwing corn?,don't think so owen, mate, let your old birds out and put a bath down, when the old birds return and begin to bathe open the loft to your young birds, let them come out themselves and go to the bath, feed everyone in when your ready,i would,nt stress them with soap on wings either.atb
Guest chad3646 Posted March 30, 2014 Report Posted March 30, 2014 i would still use the haunting cage to let the birds look about to get there bearings
gulkie Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 i would still use the haunting cage to let the birds look about to get there bearingsChad u got it right they need to be out in a breaking cage so they can view their surrounding area.In the first place don't let them get to strong on the wing .get them out when they have short tails toWalk about the garden , then feed them back in ,spend as much time as u can with your YB and they will respond to your call.
walterboswell59 Posted March 31, 2014 Report Posted March 31, 2014 your right wullie if they cant see the roof of the loft it spooks them when they try to land but they will land in the garden no prob im a kind of mix between your way and owens way just this year not enough hours in the day to get the older ones out but think ive only one to come now and its hanging about just scared to land on the loft but hunger will bring it in i think ill leave the yearlings on open bowl when i go to work should come down another lesson you must make time to get them out before they can fly hope all the novices are paying attention dont do as i do do as i say lol

eagle79 Posted June 27, 2014 Report Posted June 27, 2014 strong on the wing spend a week or two moving round the loft noisily have wireless on at feed time if birds don't come to trough to eat don't worry they will sooner or later get them to scramble at your feet to get to feed plenty of noise they become bomb proof now when you let them out the slightest noise don't make them scatter sound of wireless might deter cats trying to sneek up on them it works trust me

philg50 Posted June 28, 2014 Report Posted June 28, 2014 If you have worries put them in a wire dog cage on top of loft for a week feeding them into their section each night as you open cage ,remember to put drinker on cage for when they are on roof it works for me .
BIGPETE Posted June 28, 2014 Report Posted June 28, 2014 I am new to keeping bird myself so no experience to offer but the idea of soaping a birds wings up scares me as it might make them able to fly enough to get into trouble but not enough to get out of trouble, cats etc. I am a paranoid guy though
eagle79 Posted June 28, 2014 Report Posted June 28, 2014 back again you have the answers wire cage to see surrounding late afternoon when you try them out must be wanting food to try and control them and get them bomb proof so they don't bolt at slightest movement or noise cant do no more than that my friend youll be ok
