Guest IB Posted March 7, 2014 Report Posted March 7, 2014 Hope not, Stuart. Years ago now, but one of mine disappeared for something like 8 hours after some sort of strike / near miss in or near my back garden, she probably cleared the area till the fright wore off. Interested too in your remaining birds behaviour, remaining on the loft whilst a predator was above them? Were they aware of its presence? Mine watch the skies all the time, and come in or scarper depending upon the danger. One of my clubmates described a peregrine swooping at birds sitting on his loft, as if trying to rise them. Your pergrine might have been up to the same trick?

Ps you have got to watch what you say on forums about deterrents , but if it comes near again then who knows what could happen .

Said to my neighbour if this keeps happening then we will need to pack it in .Hi Stut i had that in 2012 with a cock percy and it terrorised my birds old and young all season , would hound the birds all day and attak them comming from training tosses but it lost 69 fkn young uns of the loft that year with the bassa chasing them all day and wouldnt let them back to loft . Its a nightmare when they give you that attention
Guest IB Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Ian they weren't up nor down ,it was if it wanted to land on or near the loft , it seemed desperate , and this is the worst it's ever been here , yes you get a strike now and then , but to attack at loft that's a whole different ball game . Ps you have got to watch what you say on forums about deterrents , but if it comes near again then who knows what could happen . Agree that you have got to watch what you say about anything on a forum, and the way you say it, because both can be actionable against the person posting and the forum owner. It is also worth reminding folk that all the Unions worked together toward getting the Law on protected species changed and 'Raptors' on p10 of BHW March 7th states that the Draft for the new Law does include the key recommendations made by the Unions. So looks like we have done what most fanciers thought impossible - we have got the Law changed. Meanwhile, it would be stupid to throw that away by rash or unlawful behaviours.

Guest Owen Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 We have had severe peregrine troubles in this area for years and I thought it was some kind of nightmare until this year. Usually my celibate cocks will outfly a peregrine once they are fit. They stay in a tight bunch and fly at high speed which seems to be their protection against attacks. My birds are vulnerable when I first let them out and it takes a couple of weeks for them to become fit enough to avoid the attacks. This year we have had a Goshawk attacking the pigeons and poultry in the area. It has flown off with adult chicken and ducks. The pigeons have no chance against it because it can catch them in the air and if they dive into trees as they do when they have been attacked by a peregrine they are as good as dead. I have pigeons that refuse to fly at all and some that will dive under the loft if I try to push them to go up.Normally these monsters live in wooded areas and hunt in the rides and trees but we have reached a stage where they are hungry and they will attack anywhere. Like other people in the area I have no idea what to do about it except that I will not be able to carry on with the pigeons if this ugly git keeps this up. I know that there are people releasing these things in spite of the fact that many die of hunger so I can't see an end to what is happening. A couple of days ago a Gos had a wood pigeon pinned down in the lane near here and was busy ripping it apart in front of two little girls who were upset at what they saw. When there father came out to see what was going on it took off with the pigeon and left the area. In another incident, a Gos killed two racing pigeons in a field near here and fought a couple of buzzards off the carcasses while there were three or four people watching. One of the local farmers has had to give up keeping poultry out of doors and running about in the yard because the Goshawks will not leave them alone. According to someone visiting the farm one of the farm dogs attacked and killed a Gos while it was preoccupied attacking a duck. In spite of that the attacks never stopped because there are plenty more to carry on where that one left off.In another situation I know of a guy was keeping Cockateils in an outside aviary but packed it in because both Sparrowhawks and Goshawks attacked them continually. They would dive at the wire netting and try to rip their way into the aviary frightening the Cockateils who screamed at the top of their lungs while all this was going on.
billy_g Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 I was coming home from work on Boxing Day when a seagull bounced in front of my car with a peregrine hanging on its back, spent the next ten minutes chasing the sod away but the end was the end for the gull, looks like they will take what they can get if they can't get a doo.
Delboy Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 I was awakened one morning with the crows screaming like mad in my back garden.I looked out the window and percy had a crow pinned down and all these other crows were going mental.I helped the wee crow get away
just ask me Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 Sometimes the cock and hen will hunt as a pair with the cock riseing pigeons and the hen will be watching a mile up in the sky I suppose similar to a terrier and lurcher More shocking to read is Owens story of the gos hawks I've been banging on about these for years these are the ultimate hunters and if they grab a stranglehold similar to the falcon well that will be the end of our sport i also believe the the goshawks will adapt like the falcon has done and will hunt different to how we know it hunts today

Rolldowns54 Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 I was told a few years ago by a friend that a well known figure in a local raptor protection group was actively involved in the reintroduction of perigrines and that he commented thats perigrines sorted next project goshawks with type of mentality we and songbirds dont stand a snowflake in hells chance another person told me that goshawks had been sited on a nearby estate and there was a table made out of a sheet of ply on logs in the wood with dead chicks on it to feed these killers on in winter what a bunch of idiots !
