I do not wish to say any more on this thread which I started as the very idea of the Scottish people controlling their own destiny seems to infuriate some of the members on this site.,good luck to everyone for the new year and the 2014 racing season.

When you say your neighbour I presume you mean the rest of the UK, 63 million, Scotland is about 5 and a quarter million, I can't see you being a major player in the overall picture but I wish you all the best in what ever the vote decides

Yes include me mate,my late uncle proud to say was with the convoys and happy to say I was in Murmansk in the 60s and its one miserable place to be in winter but it lets you see what those poor souls went through,as you know they waited 60 years to get a medal, knowing my uncle he would have told them to ram it up their *expletive removed*,i could apply for his medal but people like yourself who are proud of them will do for me,thanks for your post.

Interesting post I served in the Middle East and was granted a medal about 50 years later.

My auld man served with Monty in Africa through Tripoli and the rest ,yes he fought for Britain but was always Scottish first and a believer in home rule .

I think my father had the African Star but god knows where it went, said he was only wounded once and that was in the dessert he fell back on a funnel and it stuck 3" into his hip it had to be pulled out, he took a laugh about that ,but saddly hes gone now like a lot more.

British Army in the Suez Canal Zone 1951 to 1953.There was an armed revolution that took place against what was at that time the legit Egyptian government. The Brits were caught in the middle.I spent Hogmanay 1952 in a slit trench with a Lee Enfield .303 for company.I was not quite 19 years old.All ancient history now.some friends unfortunately lost their lives and the Government refused to recognise it as a legitimate campaign for many years until pressure from veterans forced them to concede and we all got a medal.Like the man's uncle I thought about refusing the medal but then I thought about them that did not make it back!
