Guest samroy Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Hello I am looking for all the advice I can get so please help! I have just started to turn my shed into a loft at the minute I'm only using (under the wife's order's only married so trying to keep on good terms) half of the shed which is 10ft long by 7ft high by 3.5ft wide. How maby tipplers would you advise im not really bothered about racing at present but later on in say a year or so would loke to try it. Also do you need nesting boxes as well as perch boxes. What trap is beat for beginners a spuntik etc. Just any other general advice is most welcome

Ian McKay Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Welcome to the site I had a junior joined our club when I went to vaccinate his birds he said I would have to stay outside as loft was not big enough for both of us !!! He did persuade Dad to give him half of his garden shed 8x5 he was delighted and flew very well in a bad place I was so pleased to see him do well Unfortunately he discovered other type of birds
geordie1234 Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Remember you only have half of the shed mind? best of luck
Guest samroy Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 No the whole shed is 10ft long by 10ft. So im taking the cut of point at the door which is in the middle. Putting the boxes at the back of the shed allowing me 3.5 by 10ft.
hawked again Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 No the whole shed is 10ft long by 10ft. So im taking the cut of point at the door which is in the middle. Putting the boxes at the back of the shed allowing me 3.5 by 10ft. Am I missing something? Is half of 10 not 5?
MIK Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Am I missing something? Is half of 10 not 5? i take it the missus has 10 x 6.5 leaving 10 x 3.5 for Samroy
Guest samroy Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 i take it the missus has 10 x 6.5 leaving 10 x 3.5 for Samroy Lol exactly. I will eventually convert the whole shed.
hawked again Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Am I missing something? Is half of 10 not 5?It's a big door and the split is to the side of the door?
Guest samroy Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 Am I missing something? Is half of 10 not 5?Yes half of ten is five. But im not dividing the shed long ways. Giving the birds extra length It's a big door and the split is to the side of the door? The door is bang on in the middle. So when u walk into the shed thw birds half of the shed is to the left

Guest samroy Posted October 12, 2013 Report Posted October 12, 2013 how did you work that one out Einstein No I have 3.5 by 10 ft. The door is in the middle the neat box will be against the 3.5 back wall. Allowing 10 long for the birds to do what ever they want lol.
walterboswell59 Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 move the door lolmove the wife and get all the shed lol
JohnQuinn Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 move the wife and get all the shed lol That's the best repy yet lol. I kept 8 pairs in a section 4' wide 8' deep and had my best ever season that year. Hope that helps. I would split the shed side to side not front to back if you can?
gulkie Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 Hi samroy welcome as you are not racing I would keep about 4 pair cause when and ifYou decide to breed you will have 16 birds in that section more than enough .also I would Use a Sputnik I would make my perches wide and deep enough to accommodate a nestPan that will act as a perch and a nest box .keeping in mind they breed like rabbits.good Luck m8 .
soupie Posted October 14, 2013 Report Posted October 14, 2013 samroy, get your self to ballyclare on saturday. the winter fayre is on in the leisure center. not too sure if there are any tipplers there but it might be a good wee day out for you soupie

Thanks you so much for your help and information. As already said no real interest in racing apart from maybe racing them agaist eachother to see who comes back first. yeah so four pairs is more than enough.
philg50 Posted October 15, 2013 Report Posted October 15, 2013 Build an extension on to your end of the shed 10x10 and give yourself a chance as it will happen in the long run probably when your hooked and the birds will love you for it .I cant say the the wife will but yet again she might be as good as mine and help you out cleaning etc good luck anyway.
