gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Probably a silly question but worth a shout!! If you had a small loft 8x5ft could it be used breeding and racing? Stock birds- old birds - yb all in one section? Neil
andy Burgess Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 I think you could , although would have to be careful not too lose any "un-settled" stock .could only keep a small number of birds ,and if racing I wouldn't expect great results jmho.
Blue Chequer Pied Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 I wouldn't bother with stock birds if that was all the space I had. More room for racers that way.
gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 Just put pen to paper to try and figure out if it was possible and there no way I could plan it - I would ideally need 3 sections just for racing ybh/ybc/whc and then separate loft for stock an widowhood hens All of the above would not be possibly in such a small loft
andy Burgess Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Just put pen to paper to try and figure out if it was possible and there no way I could plan it - I would ideally need 3 sections just for racing ybh/ybc/whc and then separate loft for stock an widowhood hens All of the above would not be possibly in such a small loftif its all you have ,you could work it .I have raced to an 8 x 6 foot garden shed ,2 section although only 2 pairs of natural old birds and 10 natural youngsters . you could race standard widowhood system and darkness youngsters (if sexes not separated) keep widow hens in boxes on front of loft (use top of them as a landing board) and a door over the front when cocks are out flying ?? anything is possible with a little thought
Wiley Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 If space was so limited, I'd forget having stock pigeons, they aren't needed when you can purchase young bird teams so cheap these days from good fanciers. We used to keep widowhood hens as Andy says in a set of widowhood hen boxes with louvered doors on
gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 Andy how would 2 sections be done in such a small loft?
tommy2 Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Probably a silly question but worth a shout!! If you had a small loft 8x5ft could it be used breeding and racing? Stock birds- old birds - yb all in one section? Neil YEARS AGO NEIL,THATS WHAT MAJORITY OF FANCIERS HAD TO WORK WITH,AND THE BIRDS WERE A MUCH HARDIER,HEALTHIER LOT.
gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 I understand what your saying willey but I want breed and race from my own stock of soontjens
gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 The building I have is a newly built block building and was supposed to e used as something else but plans changed It's 8x5 and 7ft high 3x3ft window south facing and full size doorway on right
andy Burgess Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 Andy how would 2 sections be done in such a small loft?by placing a partition down the centre ,front to back ,small access door through .not beyond most as a small d.i.y. project .you say its brick built ,I would be tempted to put some air bricks in for ventilation .the door on the side could have a louvered bottom to help again .a single trap on the front .take a look on you-tube for some examples of how the Americans set up theyre small lofts . as for the stock you could keep the stock cocks in with the widowers and the stock hens in with the youngsters .however ,I wouldn't recommend keeping very many at all. like I said earlier ,anything is possible with a little thought .
blaz Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 had 20 race birds and 6 flying stock to 8x6.you could split a 8x5 in two sec 12 old birds and 12 yb,s for racing
gibson83 Posted October 5, 2013 Author Report Posted October 5, 2013 I've looked at front to back split with access door in partition but I feel it's too small plus only one window is bang in the middle - air bricks would be getting done without a doubt it will also be lined with timber. I just can't vision on how to do it

Tony C Posted October 5, 2013 Report Posted October 5, 2013 If your handy with a bit of wood take a look at the photo's in this link http://www.elimarpigeons.com/Article6/PigeonFanciersLung.htm Pigeons will rear young in these rabbit hutch type boxes, that would free up some space in your loft.
gibson83 Posted October 6, 2013 Author Report Posted October 6, 2013 They're quite interesting Tony although my stock would need exercise I would have to build an aviary as I can't let them fly the skies.
PIGEONPACKMAN Posted October 6, 2013 Report Posted October 6, 2013 I would try and put a picture up so members no what space you have you could put a descent aviary at the front where the window is with a divider put traps in above the roof so theres a good landing area put some boxes in one half of the aviary keep your stock in there and divide the inside in to two, one with acess to aveiry, the over half of the averiy maybe young bird section, over old bird section.
gibson83 Posted October 13, 2013 Author Report Posted October 13, 2013 Right Guys - Scrapped idea of single loft now I have: 1 x 16ft x 8ft 2 section loft with corridor1 x 8ft x 6ft single section loft with small aviary attached being my first season i will breed within the big loft to begin with but once yb are split stock birds will be moved over to other 8 x 6 loft Is this Ideal??
