One of the local doo men noticed over the past week that his youngbirds were not right, so much so that he didn't race today.

On investigation he found that on opening five bags of V/L Gerry Plus that all the bags were moving with insects inside. I dont know if this was the cause of his problem, but it maybe worth others checking this out if you have encountered any similar problems.

Very Interesting Post

I race my widowers on Gerry plus and commented to a top widowhood fancier earlier this year that something was not quite right as they were leaving far to much maize ,he thought there should not be a problem but when I still noticed the birds were not eating certain grains I stopped using it ,other years it has been excellent .

Very surprised the way the bags are double sealed there being insects inside but if so very disturbing and would be contacting the supplier direct with batch number to highlight problem .

One of the Belgian BHW scribes wrote about his concerns on maize that some used in pigeon mixtures may be GM crop - he specifically mentioned Argentinian plate maize, but there was no way of knowing for sure as there's nothing on the bag to say so, or where the contents were sourced from, for that matter. Might just be coincidence fanciers noticing maize being left maybe GM maybe the grain tastes different?

I nearly sh at myself last weekend I had just finished using the last of a bag of high fat feeding ,with the usual dust etc at the bottom , I cleaned out and put the waste into the bag rolled it over and jammed my shovel on top of the bag to stop attracting flys , I went in the following morn to clean out I scraped all sections into piles lifted my shovel and immediately felt my hand an wrist itchy , I rubbed it but the itch remained I went outside in the sunlight to have a better look , fk me my hand and nearly up to my elbow was moving with small mites , thousands of them , I grabbed a tin of insect killer and sprayed my arm , I was shittinmyself to tell the wife incase she said yer no getting back in the house , I then opened the bag and it was moving inside with them so I sprayed it as well and dumped the bag in bin and sprayed all round about where the bag was , fk me I can still feel them even as I write this , and I've noticed my birds leaving maize this year as well but looking for other seeds .last time I seen this was in a bag of peckets were a pellet feed years and years ago , so stopped using pellets for about 15/20 years

hi Brian, you need to be careful as to what you post here on open forum, you are saying on hearsay about another guy and if any v/l agents are on here and take this up and then ask your pal, and he denys it your the fall guy for lost revenue, your mate should at the first instance, report this to the company for them to rectofy the problem if any, they are entitled to get that, the same as if you found a mouse in a

bar of chocolate, the thing is hearsay does not give anyone the right to repeat what they heard, unless they can produce evedence to there case, and should the fault also come about by the way the grain is stored, it then might have nothing to do with v/g at all. remember 2 bugs in a bag can soon become thousands within days

and they could have come in from the bottom of the feeding can, when sat in a place inside or out side the loft as most will tell you have a look under nest bowls or drinkers and you will find wee things, that look like out of Jurassic park under the microscope don't shoot me down, as i am only here for the Pilgrimemoticon-0167-beer.gif get a letter of and await there reply.

hi chaps

I myself was using marrimans(Verse Laga) superwinner as i was only using it certain days the further i got down bag the more it smelled like urine so opened the bag in garden and it was heaving with tiny white grain mite binned it never bought it again.

i once bought 1bag hemp 1bag rape 1bag canary 1bag safflower mixed all four into sealed 12kg tubs

after using it a while i noticed too much dust at bottom of tin i was using to feed it on checking every tub had it.

it came in the hemp as the proprieter splits bags and upon checking those they were covered with it.

bought some farm barley from a different supplier last month on getting to bottom of bag young birds went off so got dust from bottom of bag tipped on to paper then put sellotape on it then onto a slide for microscope it was covered all still wriggling around so opened fresh bag did same check full of it so another bag in bin.

the problem is rife and hard to deal with but burning flowers of sulphate clears it up

FODDER MITE STUT QUITE COMMON IN BAGGED GRAINS ESPECIALLY IF LEFT LAYING TO LONG NEAR MITRE INFESTATIONS , ALTHOUGH THEY WERE ON YOUR ARM THEY ONLY ACTIVLY LIVE ON GRAIN , BUT CAN MAKE YOUR FACE AND ARMS VERY ITCHY :emoticon-0167-beer:

I was very interesred to read this post and the replies. Noticed that my birds were leaving a lot of maize this year amd just put it down to my being too heavy handed with it, but a clubmate also remarked on the same thing and that his wouldn't eat the pellets also which they used to no problem. We were both feeding Superstar from V/L at the time. Now prior to him starting to feed the V/L Mix he was doing great on the sprints feeding just C/W Irish with some Dep or Barley added, then when he changed over to V/L for the longer races his results just got worse. He then changed feed as the season came to an end but it was too late by then.

I must say we use VL Superstar Plus and haven't found any of these problems.
