Could we discuss what changes we think would make the SNFC the best racing organisation in the UK, the accolade it once had.

Ill start it,with what I think would help things.

1. Total Security, a sub committee that deals with this contoversial subject.

2. Total transparency, accounts made available to all SNFC members with break down of all income/expenditure.

3. Modern website, photos, write ups , averages, ace pigeons, overall member performances etc.

4. Central marking at channel races, out lying places would have pigeons ferried in by appointed drivers who would be subsidised for this.

5. A wee bit radical here but I still say an invention of a breaking point plus fatigue factor formula.

6. A paid transport manager that is answerable only to the members.( he/she is completely responsible for all transportation/convoyers etc )

7. The Secretarys position to be made part time or paid pro rata on membership, ie £8- £10 a member.

8. Hand picked respected workers for marking stations. We have anybody handling the birds now which is very amateurish and away from tradition.

would add to your no 4, that the driver would take your clock to be struck off. and returned to his house yes number 5 would help if west in the wind, also if east in the wind 10mph = - 20 min either way east or west making it - 20min ever 10 flown 15mph = -30 min per every 10 mile races from the border head wind would be the same for furthest north starting from eyemouth.

Del the racing no even started n the silly season has begun, Central marking would drive members away, and where is central, somewhere in Lanarkshire I suppose, as Ive heard the AGM may be loaded with Lanarshire members desperate to go on the committee as it was last year. Breaking point I dont think so, the wind will dictate where the doos come from also if you train them to fly from the east training from Dunbar etc they will always dogleg. Hand picked workers?, see the doctor as your pills aint strong enough, all they want to do is stand and blether, and the better the doo man the louder they talk. And we,ll get John McCord as our transport manager, hes got a haulage company and know the business inside out. Oh and if you can manage to stop the shei te coming out of Danny,s mouth then I,ll propose you for President.

Bobby, fk all silly about what im saying m8.Central marking happened in 2000 and 2001 with great results. This was held in Bathgate and all the committee were there from 12noon to 10pm. They had there dinner and tea/snacks etc and were treated appropriately as professional pigeonmen. The security in the SNFC is below par therefore central marking is a must. Also, workers used to be lettered and were handpicked, well known pigeonmen with good reputations. How its went downhill in every aspect of the above. As for the breaking point and fatigue factor, this is an intricate science and possibly too much for most doomen and thats why they dont consider it, it was the same with ets when it was introduced.

If Central marking was brought in I think it would stop fanciers sending

I certainly wouldny be travelling a mile and a sh.ite to send bt this is just me.

for me with a young family work commitments it's hard enough

Posted

Ive to travel 30 miles every week to send my doos with LSC, If the national marked anywhere in Scotland, I would be there just the same.Hey, thats just me though, always been committeed to the SNFC.PS. When they had central marking, I had a business working 14 hours some days, a young family of which one was disabled, I was secretary of the big Kirkintilloch club 36 lofts, vice pres of fed, also on the SNFC committee. So, as ye see I was very committed to race in the SNFC races and nothing would stop me.

Good on you mate but I refuse to let doos dictate my life or my daughters who has clubs nearly every night of the week.....more to life than doos in my case

I can understand that m8 as there is nothing more important to me than my family also.

Derek 2000 n 2001 didnt send to the Gold Cup as I dont drive and Bathgate is three buses, and if it goes back to that then I wont be going, simples, the security thing is fine as it is, Lorries are sealed, but then again is anything ever really secure, its only as secure as the folk who a running it, so maybe that part could be addressed by changing the whole committee, convoyers, markers and every body else, but then you are still left wit the same problems with the next lot.

Yes there is plenty needing sorted del but on here is IMHO not the place to do it.

Just looking for opinions Stuart, as they say, its good to talk. What I dont want is arguments or nasty snipes, just ideas and opinions.I put some of mine up, I was expecting others to do the same.

If possible when there is a poor weather report that the marking be changed to

Suit the weather saves them sitting in the basket 6/7 days before liberation or

Even moving the lib forward or back?

Most of the above is worthy of further discussion here my two pence worth.

No 3 No criticism of individuals, but we must do better on this score, the website and info provided is very poor.

No 5 another must for me I fully understand just how complicated this issue could become so it has to be simple to work and be accepted buy a majority

Heres one to add a completly sponsored race for the whole of scotland, a real open race where the big team guys would compete with back garden fanciers in an open to any fancier in Scotland, each fancier have the right to send three pigeons free of charge. This maybe a way back to having one National, which is something that must be worked for in order to secure the future of our sport going forward.

You once again have some very good points derek

All right Derek, good questions, this gets everyone thinking before the AGM.

1. I think the security is as good as it can be, nothing is bullet proof, maybe you can elaborate on what concerns you with the security?

2. Personally I put my trust in the Committee on this and the annual balance sheet is available is it not?

3. Totally agree, the web site is so dated and needs to be revamped and regularly updated throughout the season with more lib info, loft reports, performance reports etc...

Also instead of phoning in early arrivals, the web site should have it's own facility for posting birds and times, this will save members phone bills and save someone updating the site as it could be real time like this forum.

4.Their are pros and cons to this, but in section F for instance we wouldn't get half the birds if it was central marking.

5. Your right about the Tekky side of this, but would it really be fairer? IMO in a west wind the birds come up the East and in an East wind I think most birds still come up the East JMO.

6. Not sure this will make a big difference, and would be a major cost.

7. This is not as cut and dry as this as any Employee has rights, this could only happen if the current Secretary volunteered or resigned and the successor given a new part time contract.

8. This was successful in the past and any member should be honoured to be asked to do this, but as is clearly evident it is hard to get volunteer's these days.

Program,

Off the bat, move the whole program back two weeks, this will allow the feds to do the same, avoiding the poor weather at the start of the season, but that's not going to happen so I propose, to go to Huntingdon for the first inland or remove it all together and have the Maidstone one week earlier than currently, keep the rest the same.

These are my views and hope they stir more constructive ideas and opinions.

Posted

1. First inland race to be yearlings only (OB can be sent but Yearling to be the trophy winner) - hoped for effect, an "aim for yearlings" which my then be stopped or saved having done their bit and increasing the OB send in subsequent years

2. No OB National under 300 miles to any loft in Scotland and yearlings banned from Longest race and Gold Cup - hoped for effect - see above

3. YB National to be brought back (50 miles less) as pointless having a National where half the country are jumping their YBs another 80 mile it's simply a SE of the country feeding frenzy - The bias to the East is too great from Leicester - hoped for effect bigger send from sections which do not currently send any more than a few % of the convoy

4. Limit of 25 birds per National race introduced for all races - hoped for effect a more even send at many races where it seems some feds empty their lofts into the nat races and increasing an already huge bias in the geographical spread of the convoy (by default encouraging the smaller sending sections to take a bigger part)

5.Regional averages can be won even when a bird is not timed (as in section F) in a disaster race providing the fancier who was leading before the disaster has sent to the race. Fact is that fancier remains the champion of that section regardless of the last result

These are simply off the top of the head thoughts - I am sure there are arguments for and against all of the above. let's hope for sensible comment on people's ideas - going by some forums this is not always the case ;)
