Guest northern monkey Posted July 13, 2013 Report Posted July 13, 2013 Any opinions on the best nesting material to use ?? years ago i just used newspaper , been thinking of using nest felts but seen some bad info on them , blaming them for young bird deaths in the nest because of bacteria growing in the felt.Anybody use them ?? i have been away from pigeons for a while.............20 plus years and can`t remember people using them.

PATTY BHOY Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 nest felts should be ok now i get straw from a local farmer and i microwave it for a min or so As my loft is on a farm, handful of straw in the loft the birds are not long in puttong into the nests.
alec guinness Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Have used wild reeds for 40 years and the doos love them oh and free also!
Guest northern monkey Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Cheers lads i like the sound of something more natural , i think straw sounds good , it`s cheap and easy to get my hands on.
JohnQuinn Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 I started using nest felts to reduce the number of squashed eggs by birds sitting too tight, also i use Tobacco stocks because i think they reduce infestations of mite/flees/summer flies. I've been happy with both so i still use them. Cost isn't THAT expensive when ye look at the price of other loft equipment and products. jmo.
Guest northern monkey Posted July 15, 2013 Report Posted July 15, 2013 when you use hay or tobacco stalks, how often would you change the nesting material, after a couple of weeks or so or leave it until the young have left the nest.
andy Burgess Posted July 15, 2013 Report Posted July 15, 2013 when you use hay or tobacco stalks, how often would you change the nesting material, after a couple of weeks or so or leave it until the young have left the nest.I tend to leave the nest until the young are pecking at the pots .do clean around the bowls when needed tho.
eyesign123 Posted July 16, 2013 Report Posted July 16, 2013 Coconut nest felts are the best because they breath and bugs don't like them.

Guest geordiejen Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 avoid the really cheap nest felts they have plastic strands through them.i got a couple of squeekers with their feet wrapped in it.bought them at blackpool a few years ago.think they were only £3.00 for five.i now use a roll of the old type carpet felt looks the same as nestfelts but they are thicker and dont mess up so easily.every year i just pull all the sh** off them then put them in a bucket with strong bleach.then leave them oot to dry.good to use again nest year.

St Finnan Loft Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 john i noticed the reeds when i was over at youre lofts do you remove the buds in case there is anything living in them [they were some big nests by the way] Use reeds also, place them in a large bin spray leave them for a week.
alec guinness Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 john i noticed the reeds when i was over at youre lofts do you remove the buds in case there is anything living in them [they were some big nests by the way] Cut them to about 12 inches m8 and pop in a bag and a wee spray of chloracarb or whatever you use, leave for a couple of days and then scatter on loft floor, they are great to reuse as the birds weave them about their nests and after the birds are finished you can scatter them again and within 5 mins they have all been claimed and in nests,we watch with interest as this can be a wee form counter! Ps and free!!
