Any opinions on the best nesting material to use ?? years ago i just used newspaper , been thinking of using nest felts but seen some bad info on them , blaming them for young bird deaths in the nest because of bacteria growing in the felt.

Anybody use them ?? i have been away from pigeons for a while.............20 plus years and can`t remember people using them.

You a convert Andy? We been using them for years Wouldn't use anything else

I do like the tobacco stalks ,but rarely available locally ,but when they are very expensive .so because of that yes ,and they do the trick fine. :animatedpigeons:

Cheers lads i like the sound of something more natural , i think straw sounds good , it`s cheap and easy to get my hands on.

I started using nest felts to reduce the number of squashed eggs by birds sitting too tight, also i use Tobacco stocks because i think they reduce infestations of mite/flees/summer flies. I've been happy with both so i still use them. Cost isn't THAT expensive when ye look at the price of other loft equipment and products. jmo.

when you use hay or tobacco stalks, how often would you change the nesting material, after a couple of weeks or so or leave it until the young have left the nest.

I tend to leave the nest until the young are pecking at the pots .do clean around the bowls when needed tho.

Coconut nest felts are the best because they breath and bugs don't like them.

Cheers mate i`ll check em out.

avoid the really cheap nest felts they have plastic strands through them.i got a couple of squeekers with their feet wrapped in it.bought them at blackpool a few years ago.think they were only £3.00 for five.i now use a roll of the old type carpet felt looks the same as nestfelts but they are thicker and dont mess up so easily.every year i just pull all the sh** off them then put them in a bucket with strong bleach.then leave them oot to dry.good to use again nest year.

Cut them to about 12 inches m8 and pop in a bag and a wee spray of chloracarb or whatever you use, leave for a couple of days and then scatter on loft floor, they are great to reuse as the birds weave them about their nests and after the birds are finished you can scatter them again and within 5 mins they have all been claimed and in nests,we watch with interest as this can be a wee form counter! Ps and free!! :partick-thistle-Crest:
