billt Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 Saw egg-shells at one nest this morning, later when feeding the cock came off showing one chick and one egg with a large dent running the length of the egg so I removed It and as I was dropping it in the bucket on the good side was a big hole with a beak working hard so I helped it out, I don't normally help them out but as we know the chick needs to revolve in the egg to score a circle to force the cap off, this egg was so dented it had no chance of turning so game wee bird was trying hard to escape the shell, was surprised it was the same size as the other chick in those cramped conditions
Guest geordiejen Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 sometimes i find an eg with a small hole chipped in it.this dries the egg out and the youngster has made a mistake.if i find this i run my thumbnail around the egg and then put it back.most times the chick can then push it open.ive also opened it a wee bit and there was some blood.the chck still hatched and was fine.well done mate for noticing the chick was still alive.maybe it will repay you in the coming racing season.
andy Burgess Posted February 26, 2013 Report Posted February 26, 2013 have never helped one out the shell Bill ,they are amazing little creatures .have noted when nests have a chick that split the egg lengthways ,they tend to be a "good un" and when i read game chick , i was looking to see something else
