K J Young Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 around christmas time i noticed one of my stock hens lying on the floor , after inspection i noticed she was having trouble walking. I could not see anything broken , so i put her in a basket and took her in the house , thinking the warmth would be better for her. After a couple of day i could not see any improvement , so i made up a sling / hammock to keep her legs free. about 2/3 days later i took her out and she was walking fine.So then put her back in the loft and everything looked fine until this morning when i noticed her labouring to get in to her nest bowl. Shes an 08.
THE FIFER Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 could be the lack of calcium m8, try a half of a calcium tablet over its throat, or crush it to powder,

billt Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 some birds dont eat enough of it saw it about 5 or6 times I've not had a case for many years, I think using the calcium remedy the bird recovers in 2 or 3 days, I think that causes us to think it's Cal. def. when in fact the hen has made up the lack of Vit B herself in this period. Please someone try the Marmite solution and post the result
Guest Dorset-lad Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 some birds dont eat enough of it saw it about 5 or6 times Agree some hens dont get chance to have a peck at grit pot, i always put some in there box when they are being chased.
Guest IB Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 A hen does not use calcium from food for eggshell formation, it comes direct from the long bones in her legs. If she has just laid, most common cause is the egg brushing past the nerve to her legs which passes close to the oviduct. Paralysis is temporary and will wear off in a couple of days without outside help.
dava Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 im sure ive read that its a magnesium deficiency i could be wrong

Guest geordiejen Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 as previously mentioned it can be lack of calcium, magnezium or vits.sometimes a nerve can be to blame however make sure you dont overdo it with the calcium it can have a negative effect.i bought liquid calcium and have given them some in the drinker twice a week.its a concentrated calcium 500 ml bottle that comes from the vet.ive been told the calcium tabs intended for humans are not as good as the stuff i bought.
Guest H@wkBait Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 could also be a trapped nerve iv got a hen it happens to all the time after laying
Guest bigda Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 if you havent got any thing as yet give it a syringe of milk to see if that helps
Guest IB Posted February 14, 2013 Report Posted February 14, 2013 There is little point in feeding extra calcium as it works in balance with other minerals and vitamins. Calcium levels are controlled by the parathyroid. If calcium was short, that gland would alter things within the birds body to correct the imbalance. Calcium has also to be in balance with phosphorous and Vitamin D levels. And Vit D has to be in balance with Vit A levels. So you might create more problems for the bird.
