Dark or Light Widowhood I’ve been lucky enough over the years to top the Fed & from 60 to 500mls with up to 6,700 birds In some races using both systems of widowhood by darkening the loft during the day, also leaving the loft light. When I say darkening I mean you can read a news paper.I do find by darkening the loft the birds always seem to rest more. What system do you use and why?

My widow-hood ends are 75% perspex roofing, so light from first light to sunset. Having had my best season with 6 X 1st Feds I think that it is heat you need to provide rather than light or dark. My cocks get layed out on the front of the box and are obviously getting plenty rest. When Ifirst built the lofts I thought I would need shutters but don't want to change after a great season. In my book if the system is working then stick to it. I would probably put shutters up if I was concentrating on sprint races but thats only my opinion.

Bern to be fair, our young birds only go out during the weekends for the majority of the year, Untill the young bird season starts to approach, due to our time restraints.

Yes Bern, they only go out twice a week, until the old bird season starts to come to a close. The Ghost was shocked when we told him also for his articles.

We use as much light as possible, anyone that has seen our lofts are shocked by the front of the loft.

The full front of my loft is all perspex noticed a difference in the pigeons straight away

Similar to ours but we use polycarbonate as it retains heat better, but we pay a lot of attention to temperature and humidity of the lofts at all times.

we keep ours in the dark till the last two longest races ,we ve won the averages and points in our club for the last three seasons, but always looking for different widowhood systems .

Have you got a picture to put up?

Bern, I have photos of it but I no longer have a laptop any more as I do everything from my phone. Unfortunately you cannot attach photos for some reason on basics from your phone. The only way I could get a photo if someone visited the lofts and had access to a pc or laptop. However I got the idea when reading an article of sprint champion Keith Arnold, mine would be exactly the same as his apart from we race to an open door and not a sputnik.

I upload photos from my phone to Tinypics.com. Select the message board size 640x480 then click upload. When uploaded copy and past the IMG code into the Pigeon Basics forum reply. Job done.
