andy Burgess Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 any applications wont be read until AGM, but lets hope so .its a good strong club anyway , but the more the merrier
THE FIFER Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 could possibly be a fancier who left returning to the sport, only having been away for a season,
geordie1234 Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Would love to see more involved, A neighbour of mine has some fantails and pouters so I've been slowly getting him into the sport even gave him a 12x6 loft and about 20 doos and a clock so he will join in the near future I'm sure he is keen as just work restraints at the moment
KMCK Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Our little Club has about 14 memebers but we wont hear of anymore until the agm from what we hear there may be a one or two from other clubs looking to join but I think the days of boys and men starting in the pigeon game is going to disappear unless we can make it more attractive to the younger generation I am only 26 and am in partnership with my father and younger brother, we took over from my Grandfather when he passed away and the way I see it where ever he is he will be proud that we have not just let them go, But going back to getting new blood interested just how do we as the pigeon community do this for if we dont will there really be people in 30years keeping pigeons surely we have to say its our duty to make sure our sport doesnt die with us. Sorry for the rant Just feel strongly about this. Kenny

paullock Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Not sure if concentrating on getting young people involved is the right way to go as the amount of time needed and resources to win is very high, I think we should be looking for new members in the late 20's or 30's once they are settled down and looking for something to do in their spare time, I started with Pigeons at the age of 32 after keeping budgies etc (never handled a pigeon before) and its the best hobbie ive ever had, I think its very difficult to get new members involved but the fancy really needs to look out of its bowl of hereditary fanciers to survive, they are out there but we just gotta find em. Paul.
Walter swanston Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 Most fanciers I know have been in the pigeon game since boyhood but there are a number (myself included )who became attracted to the pigeon fancy after retiral from honest employment, I can think of several in the same position.I am well aware of the advantages of attracting young people into our sport but it might not be a bad idea to target the retired or about to retire and do not forget these persons usually have the financial means to set up as fanciers.
alex young Posted October 24, 2012 Report Posted October 24, 2012 One of the clubs that I'm a member of were at the same HQ for 25 years. In that time hundreds of young lads used the pub and we marked the birds infront of them, some showed a bit of interest but not one of them ever took up pigeons. We also had ex-fanciers use the pub and none of them restarted, any new members were from existing clubs or had moved into the area.Being a minority sport I think we need to target all age groups and hopefully some will take up this great sport.
