Greywings Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 What appeals about racing pigeons, there are several types of free flying birds you could choose? As I said earlier I'm a complete novice and may decide to change direction in this sport, if I decide to get serious at all. Racing seems to be the most exciting and rewarding route.
Greywings Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 I forgot to mention, I have also kept and bred aviary-bound diamond doves. Are these similar to pigeons in any way? I found these birds remarkably easy to maintain in mixed aviary conditions. They are extremely beautiful birds!

Guest Owen Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I was in exactly the same position as you in 1996. I had just left a Smallholding and I had been breeding and selling all sorts of aviary birds. In addition I had free range chicken for eggs and intentsively reared meat chicken. Then there were the geese and turkeys at Chirstmas, and Ducks about every quarter. All in all I have had a very good education in keeping feathered things. So when I found myself starting a new life in a normal house, I thought I would choose between keeping and training dogs or possibly something else. Of course the something else became racing pigeons. It seemed a natural progression at the time. Wrong. To say I have had my ups and downs is an understatement. But in the end I have come to really enjoy the birds and the sport. Perhaps I should warn you, you will have highs that take you to the top of the World and sometimes lows that will be hard to handle. But in the end it is a wonderful sport and there are some great people in it. By the way, this forum can become addictive but it is a marvelous source of fun and information.

les Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Hi! After having kept just about everything feathered under the sun from Zebra finches to African Greys, I've found an interest in the world of pigeons. I know my bird biology and husbandry off by heart but am a complete novice when it comes to training and racing pigeons. I am totally willing to learn and I am here to listen! I am very much looking forward to entering the world of pigeon keeping! can i ask you for some honest answers ,because if you cant stand these things then leave pigeon racing well alone because it will cause u to much greef and sorrow [COULD U PUT UP WITH WATCHING YOUR PIGEONS THAT YOU CARE FORE BEING KILLED ON A DAILY BASIS ,AND EATEN ALIVE ,LOOSING THEM AND KNOWING THEY ARE DIEING A SLOW DEATH SOME WHERE ,THEN PUTTING UP WITH RULES AND REGS THAT DONT MEAN SOD ALL ,PLUS A HUNDRED OTHER THINGS THAT WILL DO YOU HEAD IN ]if so welcome ,if not walk away while you still can ,because once it is in your blood you will be subject to all these bad things on a daily basis .[there is not a pigeon fancier that wont agree with me ]but the good parts of racing pigeons are BRILLIANT .ATB les.

Nothing like a bit of optimism to get you on your way then! I've kept bantams before, so I know what it feels like to have animals predated by foxes cats and spars, my aviaries have been swept with illnesses and other misfortunes that happen so fast they make your head spin :'( I've lost entire breeding clutches to vermin. I know the frustrations and hardships that come with keeping any kind of animal. I may be female but that doesn't mean I'm not thick skinned
Guest Vic Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 This reminds me of "Pigeon in the Kicthen" Is it still there?

I may be female but that doesn't mean I'm not thick skinned you have been warned ;D wait for the rules and regs and especialy the MOANERS : hope it all goes well for you ,decide what type of racing you want to do ,ie sprint or distance ,get the birds bred for the job in hand it will save you years of work ,[but only get them from 1or2 people ]because u will bring trouble in your loft if you get them from here there and every where ,you will be inundated with offers of birds on this site [all genuine]they wont mind if you turn them down ,if you dont listen to any thing else please listen to this it will save you a lot of time and trouble ATB les.
Greywings Posted June 3, 2009 Author Report Posted June 3, 2009 Thanks for all your replies and advice, I won't be after some birds for a while yet, as I need to do my research and get my loft sorted! I'm sure you'll be hearing from me soon enough!
pjc Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 This reminds me of "Pigeon in the Kicthen" Is it still there? I did look for the thread the other day. Last time i heard from David, blue boy and junior along with penny were all doing well but berwyn was missing susspected hawks supper.
Greywings Posted June 3, 2009 Author Report Posted June 3, 2009 Did you ever keep owls?????? Stuart No, that's a totally different area to what I'm used to. The requirements are totally different! I do know a few people who are into BOP and owls though, and it just seems like a massive leap into the unknown. I've been hunting etc a few times with BOP and it just isn't for me.
Guest spin cycle Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Thanks for all your prompt replies! I'm sure that there is lots of knowledge to be gained from this sport. Incase anyone is concerned I'm not going to be getting any birds until I'm 100% sure what I'm doing (may take a while ;D) i've had racers 4 years and sometimes i still don't know what i'm doing (dizzy). if you've a background in bants/finches you'll be fine husbandry wise. its getting something flying about/coming in thats the first challenge. welcome to the forum and good luck
Babybird Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Welcome Greywings, I have only been a member myself for a week but have already learned so much. I am also of the frame of mind to learn as much as possible before getting my birds and the people on here have been so friendly !!
Babybird Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 I may be female but that doesn't mean I'm not thick skinned Woop woop u go girl!! ;D
